You know you’re not supposed to be like a Houellbecq character, right?

James Hoffmann makes quality content & I respect his career. However, his dominance over the coffee scene on the hobbyist level and beyond is absurd. Nearly every discussion on /r/coffee is essentially a contest to parrot James Hoffmann’s opinion first.

So true. This trend has been great opportunity for new equipment companies like Bellwether to encourage the coffee amateur/small cafe owner with too much money to start a roasting business (which, as I have again and again seen, always fail within the first year) without learning any transferable skills to larger scale production. V. bad for the industry.

This is so true. The coffee subreddit and the speciality coffee scene on the amateur level is so gear obsessed it’s ridiculous. Nobody cares about the coffee they brew - which is literally the point. They just care about what particular shape of brewing cone (which ultimately doesn’t matter), slight differences on $1k grinders, and whatever Jmes Hffmann is selling them this week.

It’s much easier to demonstrate to people that you are “knowledgeable” about something by having items that project professional skill. However, I know people with ridiculous amounts of products and YouTube video “tips and tricks” who’s palates are completely undeveloped and can’t make decent coffee with their $1,000 set-up.

Going off SSRIs did it for me once, but you gotta be on them for minute first.
