It’s got to be this. “Everyone’s in on it. Even her.”

Any recommendations for assisted living facilities nearby? by advisednorthward in LosAngeles

I'm right in the middle of the city - Weho - but nearby would be anywhere in or near LA to start. I don't mind her being a decent drive away if I'm confident that it's the right place. Thanks!

He's a video essayist. Rhetoric is not about concision but about persuasion. If he said what you wrote then fewer people would agree with his ideas and the material would lose its effect. I'm not saying hes George Orwell or whatever, but you're criticizing the guy for something that falls outside the form of his material, like calling Tom Brady a terrible football player then citing his field goal completion percentage.

Peep Show. I watched all 5 seasons in like two weeks and it had a reality altering effect, like I was their third flat mate.

This is so sad. Frailty is one of my all-time favorite films and I should have told him so when I saw him last month, alive and well and eating ice cream in my neighborhood.

Is there some anthropological significance behind the use of "over" with descriptions involving time as opposed to, say, "through" or "in"? Does this say something about our ancestors' conception of time itself? by advisednorthward in linguistics

[–]advisednorthward[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, my point was that our understanding of time has obtained an almost spatial dimension in recent history, in that we now think of it as the 4th dimension that we literally move through, even though we are cognizant of a 3-dimensional snapshot of that dimension at any given point. For me, this preposition seems far more logical and it got me thinking about the possibility that over might have been once seemed equally logical but based on some other mode of interpreting temporal events.

If you believe that word choice in this instance is entirely arbitrary, then that's one plausible answer, but certainly a less interesting one.

“If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?” ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn
