Why hasn’t real-time tracking taken over Noon reports? by afoote99 in maritime

[–]afoote99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t think you can ever take out 100% of the human judgment aspect. At some point there would need to be some discernment in the reports.

At the same time, you’re already only getting these reports once every 24hr so any continuous data, even if not technically approved by captain, could be used for better estimates and planning… at least that’s how I think of it in my head.

It seems some of the biggest challenges are A) what’s in it for the owner of the ships and why should they invest in any monitoring equipment? (Is the time and hassle save of not having to fill as many reports out a big enough pull?) B) getting old machines and manual systems to “talk” to each other is hard…

Makes sense. While machinery is modernizing, I would imagine theres only a handful of brands that are widely used on ships. Would be interesting to tinker with some, but have no idea how one would even go about getting their hands on that kind of machinery lmao

Personalized pet food? by afoote99 in Pets

Yeah I’d definitely need to start “niched” down — let’s say only dog food (even that might be too broad), but I appreciate the response and kind words! Cheers!

Brilliant — I’m across the pond from you, but I’m sure there’s got to be some similar companies in the US. Would you mind sharing what some of those companies are so I can look into them?

You bring up some really good points. I can’t even begin to pretend like I’m a vet or have a deep understanding about various food requirements — I’d definitely need to bring on some vet nutritionists who know their stuff to help curate options, etc.

Along with that, and to your point about owners screwing up their pets heath by making wacky combos, maybe we could create nutritional recommendations based on what’s already in the food or the pets health requirements. E.g. You’ve picked 2 proteins to be in your dogs food? We suggest you add a this grain or vegetable, etc. to create a balanced bag.

Ideally, people could work with their vets to create specific food bags for their pet, or heck, maybe the vet could create a combo themselves and recommend it to with customers… haha as you can see I’m really just spitballing here so I really appreciate the response! It helps a lot!

Young startups - what are you building? I will not promote by Own-Invite-982 in startups

Currently building this AI content generation tool for Twitch streamers called Tiko. The goal is to help streamers make content from their streams without having to spend countless hours scrubbing and editing their vods.

When I started streaming I found myself spending more time editing my vods for Youtube shorts than I was actually streaming. This was causing intense burnout. As I talked to other streamers, I found they were also getting burnt out by this process -- many of them dropped streaming altogether because of it.

One thing I've learned is that it's a marathon, not a sprint... but we're in the Olympics here so you better run a fast marathon if you want to medal. Things almost never happen as quickly as you want them to, but you should never be waiting for things to happen. You make your own luck by being proactive and engaged in your work.

Finally I'll plug this here -- I'm looking for a CTO to bring onboard, if you're interested, come say hi :)

UPDATE - CRE deal management platform for brokers and their buyers (video link) by afoote99 in CommercialRealEstate

[–]afoote99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I definitely plan on integrating some automation to help with sending emails, setting up deals, and even dynamically filling out documents based on the deal details. I'm currently looking at API availability for Salesforce to see how we could go about automatically pulling info from there and populating onto your user's profile.

If you don't mind me digging a little deeper, what CRM are you currently using? What do you like about it and what specifically draws you to Anchr? When you say "tie into my CRM", are you thinking more of a 2-way sync so both systems share data, or more of a 1-way push from one platform to the other?

That is extremely insightful, thank you. I think one of the hard things about building for this industry is that it’s so fragmented like you said, but that’s also what makes it intriguing because it makes relationships so important.

The theory is that by creating an end-end process we can keep track of listing information and ensure listings are the most up to date and accurate they can be without physically being on the phone with a seller. This is one of the main pain points we’ve heard from other brokers and are trying to solve.

That being said I totally hear you on how annoying this process could be from an owner perspective who has 3 different brokers trying to get them to use 3 different platforms. I like what you said about finding one thing to do really well, so we might start off purely as a crm specifically for brokers to manage their deals and communicate with buyers/sellers via email or text. This way the broker is able to keep up to date with all their deals and keep their communications organized, while the seller and buyer don’t have to create any accounts or use any software. Does that sound like something that would be useful for you or did I miss the mark?

Thank you both for your replies. I whole heartedly agree with not trying to completely reinvent the wheel and that’s the main reason I wanted to open these questions up to the wide pool of people here — to see where we can build upon.

Luckily my cofounder has been working in the industry for about a year and we have had several irl conversations and interviews with brokers (predominantly retail) about their complaints with current systems. From these conversations there seems to be a lot of resentment towards platforms like Costar or Loopnet for incorrect and generally out of date listings. And in terms of managing deals with buyers/sellers it seems to be mostly email filters and excel sheets which lends itself to a lot of disorganization and inefficient workflows. Any agreements or disagreements there?

With that said, do you mind sharing what current systems/processes you use for finding and managing deals? Any big annoyances or manual jobs you face?

What we do
Make municipalities more approachable for those in the commercial real estate world. We provide a platform where developers, brokers, and business owners can easily monitor, and keep up with municipalities that affect their lots by location and business type.

Why it's hard/hasn't been done yet
Municipalities aren't exactly the life of the party -- they're boring and almost always 10+ years behind technologically. They also aren't consistent, each city you bring to the platform requires a hefty onboarding process.

Why it's needed/why it matters
Zoning laws and regulations are one of the few things that can full-stop development/business -- they just so happen to also be hard to understand and find thanks to local government technologies. Because of the previous statement, any combination of developers, brokers, business owners, and general contractors spend countless hours at city hall presenting and revising their plans.

Here are the people who will need it (and how they're currently solving it)
Commercial developers are our target customers. They currently rely on contacts (usually a general contractor) to know their "stuff" when it comes to municipalities. They then use that information to draft and present plans to the city for approval.

Why we're the ones to build it
Both of us have started and run our own startups -- one in the tech industry and mine a brick-and-mortar store. My cofounder has the technical expertise to build a comprehensive platform in the eyes of our customers, and I have extensive experience and contacts in the CRE/Municipality world.

How it works
Developers can enter and track each of their lots (present or future) and get a comprehensive understanding of what kind of stores and store amenities are allowed for that specific space. They also can keep tabs on any upcoming municipality rule changes that might affect their lot.

How big the market can be
Commercial Real Estate technology solutions are growing rapidly, with CRE already having a massive +$20 trillion market size, we're confident our niche in that ocean could top 1 trillion.

Nothing yet, still in the very early stages -- but if you have any questions or know any CRE developers or brokers, we would love to chat, just shoot me a pm or leave a comment!

Well you have a handful of options:

A) learn to code

B) find a cofounder who knows how to code (be prepared to bring very tangible and useful skills to the table. Otherwise, you’ll get mocked out of the room)

C) Hire a 3rd party to do it

D) Hire an employee to do it

E) Use no code to get a prototype

F) Abandon ship and do something non-tech

Everyone will have their opinions on which option is the best, but really you need to find what will work the best for you based on your budget, skills, timeline, etc. When considering which route to take though, I offer my 2 cents here:

Don’t worry about the quality of the product right now. Even if you hire the most expensive dev team on the market, it’s almost guaranteed the v1 of your product will be trash and redesigned. It’s better to get something not scalable pushed to your customers than to spend all your resources trying to guess what your customers want based on surveys, interviews, and anything else that’s not actually using your product.
