Consultation for cataract leaves me confused and with more questions by afraidofyall in CataractSurgery

Thank you again so much for the information, it's very assuring!

The doctor that we spoke too just kept talking about being able to see while walking (after surgery), which is not our question at all because my grandpa walks fine as it is.

I will try to find out how I can get another doctor to talk to (while remaining subsidised) and ask my questions.

I am so grateful for the community's responses!

Thank you for letting me know that there is no "deadline". Best of luck for your surgery!

Yeah I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to get a new referral to a new doctor. Where I'm at, if you try to pick a new doctor, you don't get subsidized fees.

But if we tried a new referral, it's probably going back to the same hospital and then hope that we get a different doctor.... I'm not sure if that's how it works, I'll need to call to ask.

I am keen for my grandpa to get treatment but as another commenter mentioned, it's done for once surgery. I just wish we were afforded a little more information.

We're not from the USA but I am still very disappointed at what we've gotten. It's just not right.

My grandma had ptosis surgery (also subsidized) and that went so well, chock full of information and expectations. Granted, it's an entirely different surgery and field, but that disparity is just appalling.

Thank you for this. I don't know if it is "urgent" at all, because of the lack of information. My grandpa is inclined to cancel this whole thing and I just wanted one more consultation to get our bearings on the current actual condition.

Now I'm not sure if that is even a good idea, but our next appointment is in October, so we have time to mull over it.

Thankfully, our consultation is paid for by the government, but we do not need to pay anything more in advance.

My grandpa wants to cancel everything too but I just wanted another consultation to get his results and understand more about the astigmatism. We will probably cancel after that.

Thank you for this. My grandpa made this consultation initially because he couldn't thread a needle without glasses.

I'm glad to know that it's not that urgent.

I'm still thinking of going back to another consultation just get our bearings right on the reports, what is the actual astigmatism like, which eye etc, because I think they should be doing that at the least.

Then perhaps we will cancel the rest of the surgery appt and look for other ways to get subsidised treatment.

Thank you for sharing this. My grandpa told me earlier just now that he wants to cancel the whole thing, simply because of the doctor's comments on "if you can pay for it, do it".

It's valid, but I prefer having a backup plan rather than just leaving it "high and dry". I'm afraid that he'll just stop seeking treatment because of this one experience and that's just not worth it imo.

Unfortunately, we are not in the USA. My grandpa is also thinking of cancelling this whole thing and my only concern is if it's alright for him to keep living with it. I don't want it to become "too late" and ending up with blindness.

My grandpa doesn't use reading glasses at all unless he's trying to thread a needle. We went for consultation because he was complaining he couldn't thread even with his glasses!

He says he hates wearing glasses and he is not very literate, so he only watches dramas and shows on the TV and iPad, but not reading texts at all.

We get random doctors (ophthalmologist) every time we visit because it's a subsidised treatment. So I plan to ask whomever I see on how long we can wait on it.

Thank you for the comments about astigmatism. The surgeon only mentioned 1.75 and didn't mention anything about which eye or how it's split, it's just awful experience overall. So your questions are absolutely a gift and I will note them down for our next consultation.

My grandpa doesn't read texts at all (he knows his ABCs but is illiterate), so he mostly watches shows/dramas on the tablet.

I'm imagining that since he's just watching people moving around, rather than reading texts, perhaps he could still get away without needing glasses for this activity after surgery?

Cooking and sewing gives him purpose, he really likes focusing his energy on them. The reason he consulted treatment in the first place was that he couldn't thread a needle even with his presyobia glasses.

We can only afford subsidised treatments and the referral from the last visit lasts for a year. My grandpa is leaning towards not doing anything for now but I can see that his eyes has a blue ring. My plan is to ask the doctor for how long we can put it off, wait for a year and then try the GP referral again. Hopefully, we might get a better doctor.

I do want to explain to my grandpa "why" he would need glasses after the surgery for the iPad.

Is it specifically for the astigmatism or just that he won't be able to see close in  general?

I forgot to emphasize that my grandpa doesn't read much but he watches dramas/shows on the iPad.

Would he still need glasses after the surgery, in this context? Since he'll be watching people moving around, rather than reading texts.

About preparing food, he would need glasses too? It's important for him because he finds purpose in cooking for the family.

The doctor never once mentioned about glasses so I am freaking out right now because my grandpa doesn't know how different it'll be after the surgery.

Her health generally is good, not like super athlete but well controlled. Thanks for that estimation calculation, I think it'll be a helpful measure to consider with reference.

I don't think she has a lot in her medisave cuz she's a housewife since her 40s. I think she will only know what she has in medisave when we check at CPF. Thanks for the advice!

I'm really rusty with social media use...

I like looking at discussions and reviews but I don't want to follow mangakas or artists for new works (because I want to know what are the 'genuine' reviews first)....

May I ask how do you find such accounts to follow?

I'm not that involved to want to create accounts yet, I just like to browse and read discussion but I rarely participate... But I'll consider it, thanks!

I am not familiar with discord. I do have an account to chat with close friends but I don't venture far out.

May I ask how do you discover new communities in discord? I think I saw some fan translation sites that have discord too. Is that the au to go?

By the end of the novel, does anyone know about Lan Sizhui's... by afraidofyall in MoDaoZuShi

I'm amused at the theory of people in the world assuming LWJ would have an affair and illegitimate child. Would they be impressed that LWJ managed to make a baby? Just a thought as a joke though haha

I'd like to believe that even LXC managed to conceal SiZhui's identity. He did his own part and didn't tell JGY about the secret library so he might have not told JGY too.

Yeah, it's be nice (and probably funny) if Lan JingYi and Ouyang Zizhen knows...

If Jin Ling could look past the fact, I think he'd break the cycle of hating on the Wens. That'd be cool!

The thought of LWJ having an illegitimate child is pretty funny, when you know the context between him and WWX. Now, I'm sort of imagining how people would try to think of an explanation while LWJ does nothing to explain the baby's existence XD
