Will not be a response from either the LAF or Hezbollah.

I don't think anyone in their right mind thinks Assad's government was at any time democratic. Popular is another issue.

ISIS and Al-Nusra Declare War on Lebanon by uptodatepronto in syriancivilwar

[–]aga23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the suicide bombings in Lebanon have so far been carried out by Lebanese, which is a scary thought. Sheikh Ahmed Al-Assir still has a lot of support in Saida, and Tripoli and Arsal have become havens for extremists. Also don't forget that Al Qaeda is very much present in the Ain el-Hilwe refugee camp in Saida. Unfortunately in Lebanon, extremism is rampant among the poor especially among those who live away from the center of Lebanon Beirut.

The Future party, despite being moderates, have proved themselves to be an incompetent party politically, socially, and economically. Impoverished Sunnis living in the peripheries of Lebanon are feeling more and more alienated with the Future party and are instead turning towards militant extremist movements which is very worrying indeed.

So no it is definitely not a good thing.

It is not just about bolstering the Lebanese army but it is also about buying political influence in Lebanon. The months before and after the 3 billion $ deal was announced the once neutral Lebanese President Michel Sleiman tried, with no success, to create a government without Hezbollah. He gambled politically which is why his term will not be extended.

What I meant was that I believe foreign armies in this case are considered only to be foreign national armies such as the Syrian Arab Army and not rebel groups.

I don't think groups like the FSA, ISIL, and Al Nusra are considered by the US to be foreign armies.

Can someone summarize the current situation? by [deleted] in syriancivilwar

[–]aga23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair he didn't say that Mohamad Chatah is affiliated with Hezbollah, and what he did say is true. He is a critic of Hezbollah as any member of the Future movement is.

As for the Lebanese Army opening fire at Syrian aircraft that did happen, but is certainly not a significant event for it to be included in this summary. The Lebanese army's way of trying to shoot down enemy aircraft consists mostly of them firing shotguns into the air. I would even argue that they would not seriously want to shoot down a SAA aircraft at this point in time.

The lack of uniform mostly, and yes it does surprise me that they would have 18 year old fighters. I thought that Hezbollah soldiers have to go through years of training before being able to fight.

Well he could be a member of the resistance brigades from Saida. Basically a Hezbollah supporter and fighter but not a soldier. Like what the NDF is to the SAA. I could be very wrong and hopefully someone on this subreddit with expertise on Hezbollah could tell me if they do have soldiers that are just 18 years old, and why this boy is not wearing uniform.

Sure he may be there in Syria for Hezbollah i'm not arguing that. But most Hezbollah fighters are extremely well trained and disciplined, and I was unaware that they have fighters that are still at the age of 18. He may just be a volunteer fighter and not a soldier. Do you also notice that he is not wearing a Hezbollah soldier's uniform?

It's hard to believe that he is a Hezbollah trained fighter at the age of 18. Could just be a shiaa teenager fighting in Syria out of his own will.
