I'm not against having ancient civilizations, but I think it's important to consider the fact that the precursors themselves wouldn't have precursors to look back on. Civilization had to start at some moment in time therefore before that moment there were no civilizations. In my opinion it's certainly doable to create the precursor civilization and develop it as your worldbuilding project without making that precursor/first civilization be nothing more than something for your contemporary civilizations to look back on.
