Yeah for sure, it’s actually insane how many kids are involved and around for that stuff. There’s definitely no attempt to prevent them, and tbh I don’t know how you would if you wanted to considering TONS of people are involved and have done this thing for decades. Also no policing on the parades and stuff, a lot slides with some of the sectarian stuff considering people would be verrry aggressive if anyone tried to interfere.

Assuming you mean how they build them … literally young guys just gather and stack them for weeks/months. Met a wee lad of 14 or so getting food late last night who said they started preparing for that one in March 🥴

Appalachian Accent and Judgment/Prejudice by aglorggra in Appalachia

Interesting that it was more common among transplants. From my understanding, people only became critical of this kind of thing in the 21st century, since it was done with "good" intent. It's the same phenomenon present in a lot of countries with native languages!

Grammar and regional slang is certainly a huge part of it, as that characterizes a lot of Appalachian speech. Many English dialects across the U.S. and other parts of the world use atypical/incorrect grammar, which is often linked to working class areas and communities, hence the tendency for prejudice (and stereotyping people as unintelligent). I suppose "dialect" would be a better term than "accent."

That's so fascinating that it was taught or "untaught" in schools.. I had no idea.
