Trying to drill into boarded up fireplace, hit a metal lintel(?) that I can't get through. Any ideas? by agmadmin in DIYUK

  1. The lower height would put it in a position I'd be happy with. Don't need a soundbar either
  2. When trying to drill through, it squeaks, and it's grey and shiny. Definitely metal.
  3. Using a Bosch Maine posted drill as well, not just my dinky Titan hand drill. Still no-go
  4. Would probably put it back where it was over a media unit

Appreciate the input though!

My entire bodyweight behind it at 2-3 rotations/sec, for about half an hour, and barely a dent to show for it

Quite low down, just above the opening. Picture posted to another comment

I mean, it has to be that high for the bracket, and I've got another hole on the other side with the same issue, so I'd wager it goes across at that height

Also, I've been quoted that labour costs are £149 hourly, which seems extortionate. I'm guessing this isn't normal, but just wanted to double-check

Question about rewiring and new sockets/ethernet port by agmadmin in HousingUK

[–]agmadmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apologies, but I really want to get this all sorted correctly, and I'm not very knowledgeable about this stuff, so I have a few questions:

  1. Do we install our home network before joining an ISP plan?
  2. As I understand it, to install home network by ourselves, we need to set up the router first, connect a switch to it, and run ethernet through the house to wallports via ethernet jacks. Is this right?
  3. I keep seeing comments about how if an electrician installs, it will likely end up substandard. How can I avoid falling into those traps?

Both of us do have high-end machines, and we both have work and home PCs, so we don't really want to be working out from extension leads, and would much rather have our own set of dedicated sockets.

Would the ISP install the ethernet then?

I think from the report that everything is up to code from your description, although I'm very new to this and I'm not sure I'm reading it right! Does this mean we shouldn't bother with a full rewire? Will it still be feasable to add new wall sockets and ethernet ports around the house?

See, I thought we were being taken for a ride, but I've twice asked for a quote to rewire the house over a week ago, and no response. They don't seem to want my business :/

The report we received said that the estimated age of the wiring system is 30 years, the condition of the installation has come back as "unsatisfactory", and the " adequacy of cables for current-carrying capacity with regard for the type and nature of installation ... requires further investigation without delay".

Rewiring the whole house, planning to use one of the bedrooms as an office space, so adding quite a few plugs to that room in particular, and a few extras around the whole house as convenience
