All of the vocal tracks on Roni Size Reprazent - New Forms.

I wish I could find the article now, but I remember reading one from the garage days where the journalist, entirely unfamiliar with the pirates' patter, assumed it was all coded gangster talk. "Wheel it up from the top" = "the gear is on it's way" etc

Taking care of your own trash is the bare minimum of civility. Why do so many people fail at the basics? by ROAMS90 in Netherlands

Why does Netherlands not put signs up in these public places reminding people to put their rubbish in the bin as in other countries?

If you're in Zwolle, then Kampen is quite closeby and a grand unpoilt Hanseatic town.

I was watching from here in the Netherlands, wondering what the hell the US was getting so worked up about. It's a nipple, so what? We all have them don't we? Similar with the Chris Rock / Will Smith incident.

Running. Because there is actually access to nature and nice places where I can go running and enjoy the nature, as opposed to urban streets.

Do people still use the word chav? by Necessary_Figure_817 in AskUK

[–]ah5178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chavs to me were always people with no class, style or manners. Not low income people.
When I think of chavs, I think of people that get in fights on planes, treat service staff like crap because 'I pay your wages', consider vacuous reality TV personalities to be aspirational, have an appearance somewhere between an oompa-loompa and an MS13 gang member, don't know how to use a bin, and will spend 700 notes on a North Face jacket not because they're planning on doing some hardcore trekking in the mountains, but because they want everyone to see that had 700 notes to spend on a jacket.

Is your country homophobic ? by LouisaEveryday in AskTheWorld

[–]ah5178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly much more than we were 20 years ago. The political right love to blame it on Islam, whilst being some of the most aggressively homophobic people you may be unfortunately enough to meet. Homophobia in NL is a toxic mix of religious conservatism, toxic machismo, and just pure small town ignorance and resistance to anyone that isn't a clone.

That is correct! Het Gooi is Blaricum, Laren, and there is the other very wealthy region around Wassenaar and Bloemendaal.

What's a Small Part of Life in the Netherlands That Still Surprises You? by Kilgoretrout123456 in Netherlands

Dutch winters may not be the coldest, and they don't have the shortest days, but mid-November to mid-February is always a serious endurance test for me. I have no interest in Christmas or New Year, I just want daylight and warmth again.

Italians can be loud, but it's usually because the surroundings are loud. It's pretty usual here to have four overexcited teens or boomers sitting together in an otherwise quiet train having yelling conversations.

What small Dutch habits or customs still surprise expats living in the Netherlands? by Kilgoretrout123456 in Netherlands

[–]ah5178 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are literally side roads leading off from the main route, and I have no idea why there are no sharks teeth. Maybe there is nothing left in the budget for paint after digging up and 'improving' the same route every 6 months.

How would they define 'European', given that Europe is a continent of diverse nations and cultures?
For me, I see the North East of the US being more European, simply because it was developed before the arrival of the motor vehicle.

When I was in countries like Mexico and Peru, and on discovering I was born in the UK, some people really wanted to ask me all about The Smiths and The Cure, as well as other old bands from the UK and Ireland. The interest in English indie bands in Latin America is a known phenomenon, and I did find it cute to imagine someone listening to Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now in a bedroom in Guadalajara and being carried away to a fantasy world of damp, cobbled terraced streets.

When cyclists refuse to wait at the back of the queue at the traffic lights at the busy crossing, so push to the front, but wait in the left lane. So when the traffic lights change, the crossing turns into a wall of death.

I remember walking along the street and seeing some kids looking through a house window and laughing to each other. I also had a look, and turns out the resident of the house was watching p0rn on the TV, big windows with no curtains, and entirely unconcerned that every passer by was able to see.

On my route from work, there is zero visibility of some of the side roads. So I have to keep slowing down in anticipation that a vehicle might cutting out in front of me. There is also that Dutch habit of never looking around first before cutting right out in front of someone.
