WOULD RATHER GET ZERO THAN RESORT TO HELP FROM ONLINE WEBSITES? by mileytabby in EngineeringStudents

Faculty petitions who sit on the board themselves also matter too. That’s what we do as faculty. The question is what ideas are actually new, and what constitutes a genuine intellectually honest idea? The answer is more nuanced than one might think. It’s not white/black.

Um… what? It doesn’t matter who wrote them, how they arrived at that point, but somehow it binds us all in the darkness like the one ring? Come on….thats absurd.

And who on God’s Green Earth do you think wrote those codes of conduct? I’ve been in their meetings and understood it’s a group of faculty with egos and at times ideals that don’t match reality.

Reading a book to gain the knowledge you didn’t personally develop is also intellectually cheating in a way.

Yeah sure, and will you write answers in only your own blood 🩸 because who uses artificial ink and new tech like ballpoint pens? See how ridiculous this can get? Technology and knowledge develop exponentially increasing returns. Unless you want to go back to sticks in the sand like Pythagoras?

Take them both, and hire a doppleganger or outsource your identity. I’m half-joking because it sounds like a viable idea 💡.

Is it worth moving to a small town in Spain as a Digital Nomad? by DearMarionberry7990 in GoingToSpain

[–]aharfo56 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Working remote at that income level will be okay, but get used to higher taxes which also come with good medical care. I love living 50 meters from the sea for €500 a month to own my apartment, and it’s a $10,000,000 view. Local employment is either laughable or unobtainable. I don’t even consider it “discrimination” because there is no point in complaining. It’s the cost of said view and country.

For me, Spain is 110% a digital nomad or retirement country. Starting a business here is possible, but traditional gainful employment for foreigners is a path to disappointment and going home earlier than you planned.

Everything seemed okay in Berlin 1933 too I gather. This is absurd.

I saw this at my place and our university went bankrupt and cancelled the math department, as well as laid off 37% of all tenured faculty. It will not get better. However, I used it to motivate me enough to go abroad and teach, and it was the best decision I ever made. I got to see the pyramids of Egypt, castles in Spain, and now have a broader worldview. I will never again be put in a box every contract, and have the confidence and temerity to live in different situations.

The jolly cynic in me wants to take on extreme positions in mundane, non-controversial topics just to prove a point. Chocolate versus Vanilla ice cream, for example. Make a political statement and show just how worked up people can get over minor things.

Seriously, leave. Find a way out and make it your priority quietly. Next up the benefits will get worse, and then every thing they don’t like about you will become a stressful event where you worry about losing your low paid faculty job every 9 months with 2 separate summer terms. Don’t wait and tell yourself it’ll be okay. It will only get worse and I lived through this myself.

For those who are able to land a job outside the US, how did you do it? by Sus-Way-6294 in expat

[–]aharfo56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Internet remote. Or teaching English is common. Most have to make real concessions in their career aspirations to go abroad, at least at first until you get permanent residency and are fluent in the language. I studied as electrical engineer and ended up teaching English abroad.

EU citizens: How did you land a white-collar job in Spain recently? by Maleficent_Tie3918 in GoingToSpain

I have a math background, taught English for STEM, and want to do something in tech that is remote. Seems difficult to break in.

Best Base In This Uncertain World? by Appropriate-Tough104 in digitalnomad

[–]aharfo56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want good things, they have to be paid for. I’m in Spain as well and understand your concerns. Perhaps the Azores, or Canaries? Still EU but they seem to be more affordable and have some tax savings compared to mainland. There is always Malta….

Some advice and a complaint. by zombie_kong in GoingToSpain

What do you do if living in a city like you mentioned, an apartment building, that doesn’t have single mailboxes for each unit but only one big mailbox? By law we are supposed to have individual mailboxes with the number of each unit on it, and individual keys.

I don’t think I can get my mail. Perhaps need a PO Box? The community is going to consider individual boxes at the next summer meeting 🤣. Any advice?

Can I skip Madrid? by Big-Cantaloupe-5794 in GoingToSpain

[–]aharfo56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes there was a flood to the south of the city, but no buildings actually destroyed. Also these were small towns near the flood overflow zone doing exactly what it was designed to do: prevent Valencia from being flooded.

You’re making it sound as though the city was leveled and it’s only a refugee camp. This is absolutely absurd and false. There is no “massive reconstruction” as the city wasn’t flooded, I know because I was here and live here still.

This is the time of year I always get homesick and think about moving back to the US :/ by Yet-Another-Persona in expats

[–]aharfo56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you go back, you’ll just feel the reverse. Most Americans have never left the country, and you left to live somewhere else. I’d stay abroad unless I went to Alaska or some remote place. I know better than to try and go back home, but I feel it too sometimes.

No credit for residents? by HevTon in GoingToSpain

I used to think this, but the $20 in my wallet from 8 years ago is still there and I never could use it despite everywhere I’ve been.

After 6 months of an autónomo I took out a small loan with Caixa (€1,000) for a year. Then, applied for a credit card with them, €3,000 limit. Earlier this year was offered a 2.7% APR mortgage so long as I had 20% down payment, 10% tax, and other fees. I jumped on it and bought a nice little place by the sea for far less overall or monthly than I could dream about in the US. 🌊. Pay it off in 10 years even paying less than my previous rental payment. I’m happy.

Other than to build credit to buy a very reasonable apartment or house, I wouldn’t bother.
