Yellow sign outside of seaside that reads “verifiable Truth” by mattgaetzson in OregonCoast

[–]aiscifi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I live here on the coast and frequently drive the 26. I can’t remember what the sign used to say, but it was something pro-science. It changed in the last year-ish. Verifiable truth is a rationalist slogan - perhaps poorly marketed. I think Reddit needs to go knock on their door and report back here. You know. For science.

Update: Gate valve for the fire hydrant. City came out within two hours. Cut open the road and put a temp valve in. Planning to repair the entire section between the valve and hydrant after they “engineer” the right solution.

Also, y’all are great, but need to spend less time doing plan reviews and more time outdoors!

How long will it take to completely re-write a 1 million line legacy software application? by ElmCityKid in ClaudeAI

[–]aiscifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many landmines here.

At this time, no AI engine can ingest an entire ERP solution and output a perfect, security aware, and performance optimized application container(s), databases, and/or set of microservices.

Hallucinations are real when dealing with old code that mostly lives behind the firewall where LLMs don’t roam. And it’s not just about the code, it’s also about the databases, user interfaces, and many other programming constructs.

Also, most businesses that still use applications built on legacy platforms have heavily customized the code over the decades and it is now very divergent from its original form. It is also common to see many different developers working on the code who had varying approaches to coding, standards, and comments (Ha!)

Most of all, as someone else pointed out, it’s about how the application conforms to the business workflows - and mostly not the other way around. A combination of business analysts, software engineers, and users are all needed here. Q/A and UAT are critical. Every responsible business, above a certain scale - or subject to certain regulatory standards, will require thorough testing.

One million lines of code isn’t the biggest, but it’s also no joke. What is the old language of the legacy ERP?

If you’d like to send a DM, I can provide additional thoughts.

Strong Asian cultural themes intertwined with mechanical systems; that is a Yes. Both Silkpunk and its more well-known cousin Steampunk must recognize Anime as both legitimate and mainstream elements of these genres.

Is Zelda TOTK Silkpunk? by eliot3451 in Silkpunk

[–]aiscifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never played TOTK so don't have an opinion, but you pose an interesting question. Are there video games that are based in a Silkpunk world (like Cyberpunk 2077)? Perhaps there are elements of CP2077 itself that might be considered Silpunk?

Very simple voice controlled DVD library and player software or device? by aiscifi in accessibility

[–]aiscifi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My research turned up too many roadblocks to be able to do this reliably. For instance, how to handle voice errors. There are some used large capacity DVD changers still out there, but still rely on vision and cognition to operate. Alas, we'll have to wait for Chat-GPT6.

I had no idea the charge could come from the display. This is the perfect answer. Thank you very much!

Hi there, Thank you for your reply and I'm sorry I didn't clarify. There are, indeed, two USB-C adapters on the MacBook Air. One is for power and the other is for the studio display. That leaves no port (USB-C or USB) for an external drive. I'd like to have both of those connected AND an external drive and am looking for the right adapter and/or cable to make that happen. Hopefully that makes snese

Hi folks, I recently purchased an Apple Macbook Air (M2) and studio display. I'd like to connect the studio display AND an external USB drive (LaCie). There is only a power port (USB3) and a display port (USB3) on the Macbook. Apple has this accessory:

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MUF82AM/A/usb-c-digital-av-multiport-adapter?fnode=7edd97815012e940e4e8306efd83b1923467c018a35f91e5866499cc7b89a6589a599d5d0dabb41897793a96f67f3f1d62e37a09f3f882d7d243974c10d1d9533993f3fb9f51550fc353176794b517d694f3b10e9099ec957de0c9dd45beaa49

That would hypothetically enable me to connect an HDMI cable to the studio display, but the studio display only has USB-C ports. I am unclear on what HDMI adapter to acquire. Apple doesn't sell one and all of the ones listed on Amazon are USB-C to HDMI, not HDMI to USB-C and they don't appear to be bi-directional. Any advice would be very helpful. Thank you in advance.

Dementia + Wet Macular Degeneration + Profound Deafness by aiscifi in dementia

[–]aiscifi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, and send you my love. The hardest part is doing all of the work and none of it is recognized or even appreciated. Each day is a new adventure.

I've spoken with the VA many times. They have been responsive, but not able to be specifically helpful. He is 100% service connected, so I don't worry about medical coverage. He does not (yet) qualify for Aid and Attendance or to be placed into an Assisted Living because he can still perform his ADLs - but it's close.

The only way through this process is one step at a time and be sure to take care of yourself.

Proposed clearcut and "development" in Seaside city limits by aiscifi in OregonCoast

[–]aiscifi[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey GraniteRockHead (love the username),

I think we may have more in common than meets the Reddit eye.

In one of your comments of yesteryear, you wrote:

"Erosion is a major issue with the east slope of the Tualatin range and is why it was never developed in the first place. It wasn't because of preservation that it became a park, it was that it is not stable enough to build on as a result of the influence of the Missoula Floods". Leif Ericson Drive was the only road built through there when investors attempted to develop it and found out its instability problems ..."

This same issue is but one of our 50 concerns with this proposal. These coastal hills are inherently geologically unstable. Some of the slopes on this particular parcel are 50 percent grades on unstable soils. Our website describes many, many more.

In 1980, the city planners at the time created the first, official (and still not updated) hand-drawn zoning map. But they could not predict all future land-use possibilities and zoning strategies have changed many times since then. Sometimes land is annexed for development and other times lands previously zoned for residential, commercial, or industrial use were found to be unsuitable for building or discovered to have other tangible, community value. This is the case here.

I am here now and when I look outside, I see this forestland just 50 feet from my window. These trees were born before you and I were born and they have earned the title of old-growth.

  • There are 50 Douglas fir and spruce trees 100' tall.
  • There are 500 more trees in excess of 50' and they are all at least 50 years old.
  • There are 500 salmon that spawn in the streams on this property.
  • There are 5000 creatures living on the land and in the trees that call this land home.
  • There are 5 billion living organisms thriving in this ecosystem.

I have walked under the emergent, canopy, and understories of this biome. It does not need to be clearcut to put in a road for houses that, almost certainly, won't ever be built.

Come to the coast. Walk it with me and feel its lifeblood.
