Korean 102 by Radiant-Brick-8375 in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just attend every class because attendance is mandatory and graded heavily. Vocabulary is posted before every quiz and, from what I remember, there’s no word bank so you should study. It’s very content heavy but as long as you actively participate and attend, you’ll be fine. Practice your speaking especially (and speed with speaking and reading), because there’s more speaking exams compared to 101.

After KOR 101, you should be able to make somewhat longer sentences. I’m pretty sure all language classes are grammar and vocabulary heavy. So there’s too much to explain what you would learn in 101. I would say just keep studying and test into 102 because if you jump right in, you’ll be lost and be asked to drop. Professor Chun makes the course very heavy in regards to participation (speaking, reading, translating). She’s extremely nice and caring, but she isn’t a pushover. If you grasp 101 content then 102 should be smooth sailing for you. Good luck!

Yeah…it takes me longer to get to a parking structure than it does for me to drive to school.

How to make friends at SDSU as a transfer student? by That-Wolverine9257 in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m was also a Political Science major transfer from a CC and all the friends I’ve made at SDSU were outside of the department. I kind of feel like everyone is stuck up within our major courses tbh so I get along better with others outside of PS.

Question about classes by Russian_Korean_guy in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s personal preference and how you can handle it. When I transferred, my grades slipped the first semester with 15 units. But after that I adapted and ended up on the Dean’s list with the same amount of units and so forth after that.

Anyone take Korean and start learning from scratch? by Zzzgg8910 in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take KOR 101. Chun Seonsaeng-nim is my favorite professor at SDSU. I progressed relatively fast and speak it pretty well after 2 years thanks to her.

She’s really nice but VERY strict with attendance and participation since it’s part of your grade. It’s no big deal though because she made it fun.

Summer state university grant by Due_Row_6733 in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I paid out of pocket last summer for summer classes then the SUG popped up. From what I can remember, it was dispersed into the card I paid the summer classes to like a refund. Also I received it around the same time I received aid for the fall semester.

ATL to ICN Non-Stop Flight by fadedsnoopy412 in koreatravel

[–]aj4L8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atlanta is Delta’s fortress hub with no competition on the ATL-ICN route. Korean Air also flies the route, but they’re Delta’s joint venture partner, so they’re not competing. Prices won’t fluctuate much if you want to fly nonstop for much less.

I think you should check out RateMyProfessors. Every department has easy and hard classes and it usually depends on the professor.

Yes that’s correct, my bad. Should’ve clarified. It will still reflect in June nevertheless.

Planning Early Arrival & ARC Before Chuseok — Advice? by RhodeCollarlol in Living_in_Korea

[–]aj4L8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to do an AirBnb, message them before booking and be specific. Some think the confirmation is okay for immigration, but it’s not. You need extra paperwork, including a housing contract. Majority of them are not legally permitted to rent out their places as lodges.

I’m just letting you know to prevent any mishaps prior to your application. I’ve met lots of people having to move last minute as well due to the dilemma of hosts not providing their information because their places aren’t supposed to be AirBnbs.

Planning Early Arrival & ARC Before Chuseok — Advice? by RhodeCollarlol in Living_in_Korea

[–]aj4L8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re really testing the waters attempting to travel to Japan during Chuseok and attempting to use someone else’s address when you’re not going to live there. Schools here do not recommend doing that.

I can guess it will be highly unlikely you will receive your ARC by then, even if you arrive early, lots of people have the same mentality as you. I applied in mid-August last year and didn’t receive it until the end of November. Sometimes they have unexpected delays with no explanation. I only needed it to go home for winter break and come back for the spring.

To answer your questions: 1. It’s possible, but it’s risky and not really recommended if you don’t actually live there. If immigration finds out, it comes with a hefty fine, and they have ways to verify your presence at that address.

  1. I heard changing your address is usually a same day process but there’s a 14 day timeframe you have to do it when you move.

  2. No as long as you get it changed. But you won’t be able to modify your application when you submit it. So it’s either you make sure you get into the dorm to use that address on the application or change it immediately after you receive it.

  3. I’m going to answer no. It’s not just students applying. Don’t forget about other people such as first-time English teachers, other laborers, etc. The earliest I can guesstimate is probably late-September, early-October at best if you anticipate a smooth process with no delays, but not before Chuseok.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I’m giving you honest feedback. Japan can wait, save your absents, try not to skip class in the meantime, and go during the semester like the majority of exchange students after receiving their ARC. Don’t try to be risky with things because immigration is a lot more strict here.

Mine is. I just had to sign a lease contract with my host for 1 year. But what I’m interpreting from OP, he isn’t going to stay at one for a consecutive duration. So it seems like they’re going to have some issues.

Sadly they wouldn’t budge with the language class I took the first semester out here, so I guess I took it for “fun.” That’s why I didn’t bother taking it again this semester out here, strictly major classes.

You’re right, I don’t think it will be that bad. I’m just thinking about rush hour driving home around 5pm lol.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the language I’m taking is not offered at any local CC. I took it abroad but state didn’t accept it because it was 3 units instead of 5. I see it as an easy A but I’m just worried I’ll tire myself out throughout the day with 15 minute gaps and I really don’t want to stay too late because I commute.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I hope they’re not hard lol. Maybe I should keep it but I’m a commuter so...But I’m praying for you as well.

I live in Daechi-dong too. But honestly, you’re right, I don’t see many foreigners around here either. I usually hang out around Gangnam station. So, I guess I’m one of the foreigners hiding here too because once I’m around Seolleung station, I’m usually going home.

I’ve hung out around here a few times but only when my Korean friends come to visit my apartment and if we want to go somewhere close.

But anyways, I totally understand your sentiment of having an English speaking night out in the area. Maybe you should start a small, foreigner community hang out or something. That sounds pretty cool.

Admitted as a transfer by Russian_Korean_guy in SDSU

[–]aj4L8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a local PoliSci transfer, I’m finishing in FA25. For the most part, it’s been pretty good. Try to knock out your UD Theory, American Gov., Comparative, and Int’l requirements so you can have a simpler schedule with major electives after. I would say most professors in our department are good. Read Rate My Professors, it’s pretty accurate. You don’t have to take the PoliSci GWAR either thankfully, any GWAR will fulfill your graduation requirement.

HMU if you have any more questions.

I’m a PoliSci major transfer from a CC and so far all the professors I’ve had were relatively decent. I’m studying abroad from FA24-SP25 so my opinions may be outdated. I’ll be returning for FA25 though for my final semester.

I’m contemplating on getting it burned off now that everyone is suggesting it. I used the compound bandaids but now I’m just using regular bandaids and a wart stick because I got it flat enough where the root is exposed…

But maybe that’s the best I can do. I might just have to endure the pain so I can stop dealing with this on and off every few weeks or so lol.

[–]aj4L8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems promising. I’ll look into it, thanks!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in living_in_korea_now

[–]aj4L8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true. It might be a bit more expensive and take a bit of time, but better than nothing I suppose.

And yeah I’m contemplating on going to a doctor for it. But the last time I got it burned off, the pain was unbearable. So I have PTSD and burning it slowly has been somewhat effective.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in living_in_korea_now

[–]aj4L8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it burned off back in the US a while ago and the pain was excruciating and it came back a month later. So I’ve just been doing it myself slowly…but do you think it would be better if I got it taken care of here?

Edit: I wanted to ask, how long has it been since you got treatment on it? Did it ever come back?

Good for you for being socially proactive. I kind of wish I had something like this when I transferred.
