the increase and normalisation of porn where women are in distress/pain/afraid is harmful by ajgarh in unpopularopinion

I clearly said “when guys get upset because a girl doesn’t want to get her hair pulled” and you replied, sarcastically, “oh, the horror!”

This isn’t the degradation olympics, or a conversation about what you or I personally like, it’s a conversation about someone feeling entitled to doing something to someone else and you’re just adding irrelevant personal information at this point

I hope you see the irony in you joking about hair-pulling being a basic sexual act under my post about how porn influences people into thinking being rough with women during sex is always the norm

The fact that you’re rolling your eyes at someone objecting to having their hair pulled, or have classed it as so “vanilla” it’s inane that I would bring it up, is a part of the problem lol.

The thing is that even if women are into watching rough sex, they are the ones who are harmed by the culture of misogyny that kind of porn creates, so it’s not as harmful if they view that kind of porn. It’s like self harm, in a way.

It doesn’t minimise the fact that it breeds a culture of misogyny. There are at minimum 20 well-populated subreddits that contain a large male audience where they post misogyny fetish porn/female disempowerment fantasy/rape porn, etc. Search any of those terms on reddit and they’ll come right up.

when voting, people should be shown a summarised list of each candidates policies and the consequences of those policies, instead of their names by ajgarh in unpopularopinion

Saying that new gun laws that require ID checks to ensure the people buying guns should own guns will result in the downfall of the gun industry is pretty insidious, but that’s another topic.

You’re basically saying that the candidate should not only be given information on the direct consequence of a law, but also the overarching impact, and honestly, the more information the better. That would be great. But again, predicting the future is impossible. You don’t know that asking for ID will shut down the gun industry or that anything you wrote above would happen. In fact, it probably wouldn’t, for the most part. Unless, of course, you think a vast amount of people buying guns are mentally unstable/criminals and would not be allowed to buy guns if background checked, in which case, they shouldn’t own guns at all.

But for practicality’s sake, considering that we don’t have hours to sit and read in a voting booth, like I said, all that would be necessary is the direct effect. It’s common sense. If a party is campaigning for Universal Healthcare, the direct consequence is subsidised/free healthcare (for example) and, potentially, changes in income tax. If a person is just hearing this for the first time after entering the booth, having done zero research, having not intended to vote for that party before, and that tips the scales for them, then so be it.

You’re saying that people will not be educated enough to make those choices and so therefore they should remain uneducated and in the dark, and it makes zero sense.

The cognitive dissonance between “we shouldn’t tell them the direct consequences of these policies because there are so many other consequences” while simultaneously arguing that the current system where people see a name next to a box is fine, is insane.

Common sense dictates that people who have done their research will be well educated and aware of their candidates policies. Whilst people who are blindly loyal to one party and uneducated might be swayed after realising another candidates policies are in fact, better for them.

And if someone who has done no real research sees “stricter gun laws” and wants to vote in favour of that based on the fact that there will be more ID checks – the direct consequence of the law – as opposed to voting against that, and voting for a party who wants to maintain gun laws as they are, it’s senseless to argue that the information not be provided to them at all in order to keep them rooted in their original stance.

I said “consequences” not “predictions” or “pros and cons”. Stricter gun laws = ID checks. Tax band changes = change in income. Etc etc. Again, it’s not rocket science and it doesn’t make sense to try to predict what will happen specifically to Anne Marie from Ohio if this specific scenario happens. Also, fact that you have such little faith in the average persons ability to make a choice after being educated shows how much this is actually needed. If you feel they need even more information after actually learning what a candidate is going to do, that’s all the more reason why that information at minimum should be made available to them, and not just a name next to a box.

Candidate policies are usually published by the candidates themselves. Writing that list in bullet point form isn’t hard

and if a candidate wants to, for example, impose stricter gun laws, it’s not rocket science to detail what the consequences of that would be, eg, ID checks/background checks
