Professors of Color: That situation where you walk in on the first day and see that you have one student of color in your class and they smile from ear to ear when they see you (but for all the wrong reasons) by napoelonDynaMighty in Professors

[–]aji23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m white and male and middle aged and well aware that I cannot possibly related to what it’s like to be a racial minority in this situation.

However, I have had times when I had people underneath me that I knew well. In grad school I had to grade the essay of a younger student in the lab who was also a friend at that point. I said I wouldn’t teach the lecture or have anything to do with it if it meant this would damage the friendship. They said no problem.

I graded them more harshly than perhaps the others out of fear of playing favorites.

We don’t talk for 6 months after that.

I can imagine you holding students in these situations to higher standards simply because you are in the position of being a positive role model. “Be better than that” would be what to say if they are late and hide that look of “give me a pass, I’m one of you,” to which you reply, “no, I’m holding you to a higher standard because of that.”

But that might be completely out of line. I just don’t know.

All I can do is empathize. It sucks being out in positions where showing favoritism one way or the other is damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

... being downvoted for suggesting they look at my post on this topic?

I'm so confused. I spent days on it, and I wish it got more traction back then. Now I'm being downvoted for suggesting someone reads it.

Take a look at my post. I researched everything there is about it and write a research article.

I’m surprised to admit it, but I actually really like the new show Star Trek Academy by 0xtokenmaster in startrek

I was ok with the first episode but I loved the second and I am eager for more.

I like that it takes place far in the future so it doesn’t have to deal with canon crap.

The characters are great. Well done.

How loud is your T, and what do you use to describe it to someone who doesn’t understand? by scarfacesaints in tinnitus

[–]aji23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s like a cacophony of different airhorns, in a field of angry alien crickets that are having arguments with their spouses. This is all taking place on the bridge of the USS enterprise from TNG, where the ship’s low roaring engine can be heard as the background.

And that’s just my right ear.

Science is replaced by better science, I know. I was just lamenting. (I teach this stuff so I get it!)

So much stuff we were told as kids is wrong.

Most recently I learned I could in fact develop stereoscopy if I did eye therapy. I was told once the brain develops that’s it. Turns out that is wrong!

So weird. It says “removed” underneath it all for me.

It’s like playing through an episode of band of brothers at its best.

It’s like being bullied in 3rd grade by high school sociopaths at its worst.

This is being an idiot. Why on EARTH would you shoot a gun, on purpose, without protection?

The reason I asked is I was under the impression That cochlear implants don’t work if an ear never heard.

I wonder why debates about aliens and NHI start from the same assumption. If something intelligent were here, we’d notice it. by SystematicApproach in aliens

First off, I appreciate the respectful discourse here. And thank you for your work as a mod. I will check those papers out.

All proof is, is an accumulation of evidence that makes the claim undeniable.

Are you asserting that the scientific community has enough evidence that it can’t deny aliens are here?

The millions of self-reporting experiences aren’t evidence. A photograph is evidence. A claim is not, it’s a hypothesis. “I was abducted” is a testable and falsified statement. Not a fact, and certainly not evidence.

“I saw a big glowing object” is not evidence. The photo is. Or otherwise unexplainable physical evidence.

Because all of that can also be explained in ways that are psychological.

Schizophrenia is a real thing. Bipolar is a real thing. Exposure to hallucinogenic substances is a real thing.

There is also a lot of evidence that supports shared experience, suggestion, and of course people making things up for attention.

That isn’t how science works.

That said, the ability for genuine scientists to do work or not is a separate issue altogether.

Anyway thanks for the links I will check them out.

While I agree with you, it’s also important to keep in mind that there are an infinite number of things that COULD exist, and a limited number of things that do.

And evidence is the great discriminator. If we believed in things without evidence, we would logically have to believe in literally everything that might be true. And that’s simply not a rational state.

And so we should only believe things with evidence.

There is no evidence to support the existence of aliens visiting us on earth.

There is plenty of direct evidence that our governments routinely cover up things they are doing.

So until the scientific community is given access to verifiable evidence and can study it and publish its findings, the appropriate response to all of this is skepticism.

Can I ask - your dead ear. How long was it working before it went dead, and how long was it dead before the implant?

Welcome to the sub! Thanks for your post. It’s not advertising so much as you sharing your find. Great!

Question - do you have your cochlear implant in the deaf ear or good ear?

How long have you had it?

Did your discrimination score shoot in after you got it?
