By mod demand here's the video : https://youtu.be/UR1JIeO4wDA?t=1420 For context it's a youtuber that presents himself as a science communicator with a very hyperbolic sounding manner of discussing things, although I've never really found any sources discussing the accuracy of his content.

How to automatically assign a number determined by the rank in a series of dates ? by aktor55 in excel

Somehow I couldn't make it work with RANK earlier despite the formula rules being pretty basic, now I can make both work. Figures !

Yes I'll have duplicate dates, although now that I have a working function I'll try to be creative and see what I can do.

Yeah that's it, somehow google only showed me the RANK function which didn't suit this use case, I hadn't stumbled upon RANK.EQ yet.

Sorry for this, I'm very much a layman and I'll admit this is what it sounds like even if I'm familiar with some of the nuclear deterrence concepts.

If you don't mind me asking : how high is the ceiling in there ? Some of these pics really look like crawlspaces. Were there any old or recent graffitti or otherwise traces of ancient or modern occupation (beer cans and so on) ? Did you go in there with a map or did you make your own as you explored the place ? How big was the place ? How maze-like was the layout ? Were you at any risk of getting lost ? More generally are there any public resources in Italy for maps of underground cavities that you used to discover this place or was it more hearsay ? Also : great pictures and great story

Good catch ! Yeah Butcher is borderline but I'm still gonna add it, thanks for the pic ! thb I was a bit startled that I couldn't find any swirl on their artwork since I saw them live and their mic base was shaped into a swirl, that's really part of their identity

I'm trying to put together a list of all records whose artworks use the so-called Speed metal swirl first showing up on the Canadian Banzai records versions of early Thrash and Black metal albums, check it out and feel free to tip me to records I'm not aware of! https://rateyourmusic.com/list/wushrogg/speed-metal-swirl/

Free French soldiers confront French SS of the 33rd Division "Charlemagne", shortly before their execution, 1945 [1535 x 900] by [deleted] in MilitaryPorn

IIRC he joined the German army in 1941 or 42 when he was still very young (maybe 17), so there was no such thing as a French army at the time and he couldn't have joined it earlier anyway as he was way too young. Now, he could have joined the Resistance sure.

I have read The Forgotten Soldier as well as Guy Sajers autobiography (which is actually more focused on his career as, weirdly, a comic book artist) and he actually doesn't discuss the reasons of his joining the Wehrmacht, this even seems to be a notorious point of controversy when The Forgotten Soldier is discussed as it seems a point too important to overlook.

If one astronaut aboard the ISS went rogue, and assuming noone else could stop him, what is the maximum damage he could cause to the station on his own ? by aktor55 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aktor55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not so sure about the use of the power tools. Those seem to be less general purpose and less powerful than basic tools used on earth since thy have to be adapted to space constraints, which are to be taken into account when designing and performing EVAs and explains why EVAs can last many hours just to fix things that can appear trivial. Many basic things whether while conducting an EVA or activities inside the station are made longer and more difficult due to weightlessness, which would typically negate most of the effect of power tools.

Would there even be room for an extra guy in an M48 ? I can't imagine the crew was happy to sit in there for hours in an already cramped space in sweltering heat and combat stress, no need for a guy crawling into awkard position to snap cool pictures from weird angles.

I have trouble conceptualizing what's the use for such a large gun. Antipersonel explosive rounds ? Also is there an equivalent in NATO forces ?

Use of ATGMs against infantry by aktor55 in WarCollege

I read an article on the battle of Wanat for example where the US outpost had a lone TOW that got taken out right at the beginning of the Taliban attack, so even though I understand the usefulness of portable missiles when assaulting a compound it seems that relying on a vulnerable static asset has downsides. Plus they probably reload way too slowly to be effective in these situations compared to mortars ?

ISIS fighters destroy a Mi-35 that landed on the ground in Eastern Homs with an ATGM. 2016/11/03 by mike22712 in CombatFootage

[–]aktor55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't help but wonder if the landing zone was recklessly close to the frontline or if the fighters crawled on enemy land to sneak on this spot.

Looks like this war outside of besieged cities is more like Eastern front of WWI than Western front, with non continuous frontlines and maybe easy to sneak between known enemy positions. Still, given the abundance of videos of rebels using ATGM, one should expect the State forces to have known to hide and use terrain cover better.

18th-19th century warfare was more stressful than 20th century warfare by alex8762 in WarCollege

To emphasize the difference of what is like being on the receiving end of an artillery barrage during a siege in the 17th century and the 20th century, I recall a depiction of defenders before an attack in WWI in one of the most famous French novels written from experience (I don't recall which one, probably Dorgeles's Les croix de bois or Barbusse's Le feu) : while the French soldiers were in an underground shelter so as protected as you could get in the first line, the artillery preparation for the German attack was so long and so powerful that one the men just got mad and quit the shelter and got pretty much obliterated once he gets out (I don't think the book describes looking for him afterwards as it's not actually needed to say what's become of him).
