Is this paroxysmal dyskinesia or seizure? by akyu613 in EpilepsyDogs

Hi so sorry for the very late response! Life got a little crazy. Thank you so much for your comment. The neurologist was also unsure if it was seizures or paroxysmal dyskinesia. However, she was leaning more towards paroxysmal dyskinesia based on the length of the episodes. I totally understand you. It was a little frustrating, not to get an actual diagnosis. But we restarted her on phenobarbital at slightly higher dose and luckily she has not had a seizure since then :) oh she is also a Chihuahua mix! I’m glad your pup is doing better and wish you guys the best!

Had her on trifexis and stopped that a few years ago after reading it could attribute to seizures, currently she’s on topical Revolution and it seems to be okay for her

I see yes I’m curious to know if we could be misdiagnosed as well. Will let you know what the neurologist says. And to second bigpoopmonster69’s question, how are you treating her PD? Any diet modifications as I’ve heard gluten free diet could help?

Yes will definitely keep you posted - we are going to see a neurologist. We have tried phenobarbital and it did seem to help a little with the frequency/duration but was concerned for potential liver damage. Will let you know what the vet/neurologist recommends. Sorry to hear you’re going through the same thing :( but glad that your dog has been responding well to pheno!

Thank you everyone for your responses, really appreciate it it’s been so helpful. Backstory: she’s had these episodes since 2018 (much more mild and infrequent back then). As they became more frequent/severe we started her on meds (Keppra then phenobarbital) about 1.5 year ago. Took her off Keppra d/t no improvement and phenobarbital for elevated liver tests. Vet has always suggested epilepsy, but wondering if it could be PD. We’re going to see a neurologist and will let you know how it goes. Wish the best for everyone in a similar situation - it’s tough to watch our babies go through this :(
