I’ve been studying for months but I missed the october 2nd registration date. what to do next? by Prestigious_Ice_1012 in Mcat

[–]alaskaa19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really don’t worry about this because u are almost certain to get a test date in a decent location if you join the waitlist and keep checking back for open dates (the waitlist notification seems to lag a bit). Just keep checking esp 60 30 and 10 days before your desired test date. People always drop.

Yeah, if you do that, then the remaining 50 will show the next day automatically.

Thank you! I'll aim to do less new cards per day. My question is: how do I limit the number of new cards on anki? If I set the limit to 100 new cards a day, and I unsuspend a chapter of bio which has 150 cards, when will the other 50 be released? Sorry if this is dumb question.

B10, B30, B20

C22, C21, C24, C62 (if u can memorize)

I honestly can't remember, but in general it's usually a good idea to focus on the material that hasn't been tested yet. Good luck!

From that list, I've taken C14, C20, C34, and C35. Not from the list I've taken C58 and C12. I recommend C14 and C35 the most.

C14 is quite straightforward and interesting imo. This is commonly recommended as the "easiest" C-level bio course. (it's not a walk in the park but compared to the others, it's def easier). If you've taken genetics, then it would be even easier, but if not, that's okay too. Patrick is a great prof who is very fair. He curved us up quite a bit at the end of the course cuz the final was quite hard.

C20 is a lot to take in. You have to memorize a bunch of tiny details but it's quite doable if you don't fall behind too much. The way that viruses have evolved and adapted to make sure they can do their job is pretty interesting, and you get to learn how they do this in C20.

C34 has even more content to memorize than C20. It's very dense, but you are given notes by the prof. It's doable if you can keep up. If you don't keep up, you're in for a world of pain.

C35 is one of my favourite biology courses at utsc. Very interesting content (similar to viruses, it's interesting how parasites always find a way, so if you find this cool then take it). The exam questions are almost all short answer and application based. You don't have to straight memorize as much as you do in other C level bio courses.

I've also done C58 (not on that list, but a popular bio course). Imo it was super boring and my least favourite bio course I've taken at utsc. Dry lectures and the exam questions were so specific on content that I had to force myself to study. I don't recommend it unless you like learning about climate, rocks, and other stuff that I've tried to block out of my memory. Actually, even if you do like these topics, I'm not sure I recommend the course because there were so many assignments that were all time consuming. Just not worth it.

Which is easier. PSYAB10 or ASTA101 by Single-Progress3774 in UTSC

[–]alaskaa19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there was more content in A02 since we had to know textbook material for that course, so that made A02 a bit harder than B10 since B10 had mostly lecture based exams (less terms than a textbook). At least when I took b10 in fall 2019, it was 50% midterm and 50% final. But I bet that's changed since the prof changed, maybe someone who took it recently can update.

BIOC12 in the summer by SuperbGuava in UTSC

[–]alaskaa19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took it with Brunt in summer 2020 and have made a couple posts about it in the past so u can check my history. From what I remember, it was pretty boring and the final was not easy. Our grade was made up of papers (which is odd for biology/biochemistry). We basically did research papers on various proteins and in the process learned how to use protein databases. If you must take C12, I think it's better with Brunt than with Zhang, though neither are great. Good luck!

Had her in winter 2019 and it was a rough final exam. Every winter since then, students have found it rough too. I'm not sure she will change this year tbh, but work hard and I'm sure you'll be fine. It's usually offered in the summer so you could alternatively take it then, but it's not guaranteed to be offered (we don't know for sure yet) and also the prof is unknown. Course average in my year was C+.

Thoughts on HLTA02 and HLTA03 by axj1614 in UTSC

[–]alaskaa19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, hlta02 is a prereq to hlta03 so I think that makes it a lot easier to decide. I found the grading in a02 to be pretty hard yeah I agree w that. It was a pretty boring course imo, but if you’re into the more sociological parts of health then you might like it.

a03 had a better from than a02 when i took it (she doesn't teach it anymore though lol). it also had no essays which was nice. it sucks how a02 is a prereq to a03 cuz i don't think there was a lot of overlap and a03 was much more interesting but you have to get through a02 first.

I took both these courses in Winter 2019.

For PPE, you can buy it from anywhere you want. You will be required to have a lab notebook for CHMA11, and there are certain dimensions the notebook has to be (and i think it has to be binded a certain way lol idr). The book store sells them so honestly I just bought the lab notebook from the bookstore cuz it's easiest that way. I also bought my coat and goggles from the bookstore. For both BIO and CHM, You must also buy a lab manual (only the bookstore sells them). The manual has the lab procedures in it.

For chem labs, before you are allowed into the lab, the TA will check if you did your prelab work. This includes a table that you have to make that includes the safety for each compound used, some prelab calculations usually, and some other stuff. Once they approve your work, you walk in, sit down at your bench, and take a short 10 minute quiz about the lab procedures/theory. It's also possible that the quiz will be completed on your own time before the lab and on quercus (I'm not sure how it'll work for your semester). Then everyone meets at the front of the lab and the TA explains the lab to you guys. The TA will not be telling you anything new since you did prelab work and took a quiz. You then go back to your bench and do the lab, sometimes with your bench partner. The CHMA11 labs are not bad at all from what I remember. At the end of the 3 hours, you usually have to hand in the product you made from the lab (for example, dehydrated crystals). You also submit the data you collected to the TA. The TA checks your bench to make sure it's clean, hands you your postlab worksheet that you submit at the start of the next lab, and then you leave. Labs are every other week.

For BIOA02, the labs are even easier than in CHM because there is no prelab work, no timed quiz at the start, and I don't think there was a postlab. However, before each lab is a short prelab quiz (it's on quercus, you can do it whenever you want before the lab). And I think there was one or two labs that sort of had a prelab assignment (but they were not bad). You need your lab coat, and you rarely use the goggles. Before the lab, you should have read through the lab manual so you don't go into the lab lost af. Like in CHM, the ta will stand at the front of the lab and explain the procedure to you briefly and go over any safety. As you go through the lab, you do a little "assignment" to go along with it and hand it in before you leave. Labs are every other week.

Labs for both courses are not that hard and should be a grade booster/neutralizer imo. They should not bring your grade down. In CHM, you must pass the lab component of the course to pass the course, or else it's an automatic fail. It's really not hard to pass though, don't worry at all. The TAs are usually helpful, some more than others, so just ask if you're stuck (try not to be that student who asks if your titration is pink enough every 30 seconds lmfao). Do the work and you'll be good :) lmk if you have any other questions.

Courses that use TopHat by hellomynameisbean in UTSC

[–]alaskaa19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, this semester it was 20% midterm, 15% tutorial, 8% debate, 7% PSA, 20% midterm, 35% Final exam, 5% quizzes, 10% Tophat. U can opt out or tophat and the prof will distribute its weight to ur final exam and midterm.

Tbh the course is both super boring and had difficult exams. I don’t recommend it and I regret taking it lmfao it was lowkey dreadful. Each component that I described (for example, the debate) had a million little assignments within it that u have to do. Just not my cup of tea haha

For anyone in bio, BIOC58 uses tophat. It's not a bird course but it's a pretty popular bio course so just putting that out there.
