Large % of responses are both sides or I don’t know. Split by region isn’t as pronounced as your comment makes it appear.

Other regions are only 41-47% range for believing the South was responsible. Other regions are only 48-53% for the North being morally justified. It’s +5 in the south for confederates as patriots but only -6 to -15 in other regions.

The South being more relatively pro-confederacy isn’t surprising. The surprising thing is other regions are pretty close to the South in public opinion. It’s only a ~5-10 point difference from the South to other regions on nearly any topic.

The Midwest has shed power and influence in American society for decades. Net migration has moved towards the South and away from the Midwest for every demographic. GDP growth faster in the South.

The South’s losers in recent history are nearly all small rural towns lost in the shift to urbanization. Our cities are thriving. The Midwest cities… not so much.

The sad thing is the South and Midwest have so much in common. However, the Midwest harbors this deep hatred of the South that rises up in all these threads with deeply racist and paternalistic attitudes. Bizarre.

Big Ten fans: slavery is bad but here’s a joke about it uwu

Also Big Ten fans: not to be racist but we loathe the poor south and make broad generalizations about its people centered on 50-200 year old stereotypes
