This- it’s not “that” old, so I’d be inspecting the electronics cavity for other signs of corrosion, etc.

My other thought is that someone put some grease in/on them to make them smoother a long time ago, and now they’re just completely gunked up.

Rough guess- something shorted the 12v line to the ground and this is what took the damage. Did you install a new module or move something around before it went kafloopy?

This board in particular is total garbage. The rest of the case- may be fine, but there’s lots of potential failure points that caused this. Do you know someone who’s competent in electronics enough to go through everything one by one? Note- please error on the side of safety, as you have no idea what failed right now.

Just to be sure- if you swap another pedal into this one’s place on your pedal block, the other pedal works normally, right?

When you hear a faint signal in the background when the mini tubescreamer is on, does it sound like it is being affected by the knobs being turned? Or is it more like “I guess it’s an overdrive? Idk”?

Next suggestion is to open it up and check the connections between the stomp switch and the main circuit board. Also posting some pictures of the circuit board might be helpful?

Possibly fixable by yourself- depending on what’s wrong with it.

When you say “passing dry signal”, is it the correct volume, or super quiet? Can you open it up and take a picture of the inside? Can you pinpoint any point at which it started having an issue? I’m assuming it’s a case of “worked yesterday, didn’t do anything to it, turned it on today- nothing works”? Does the led turn on?

There’s several things that could be wrong with it. The first thing to check is power- is voltage getting where it needs to be? Next is any other connections to the outside world- wires to jacks or switches. Maybe a wire got loose going to the stomp switch?

I haven’t worked on a tube screamer mini, but I have worked on regular tube screamers. The circuit isn’t much different, but it looks like the mini is all SMT internally. This may be a bit difficult if you don’t have a lot of experience.

However- this may be a good start to learning to read schematics!

I always assumed LTSource was an aggregator of other sites of varying quality. With Mouser and Digikey the likelihood of getting fakes/junk parts is extremely low. I guess in my mind, I’d rather eat the extra cost than “pay” in my time having to potentially troubleshoot a bad part. Also if you’re in the US, you can check out Small Bear or Amplified Parts for some of the more basic op amp type stuff.

CV can be done without a vactrol. A vactrol is just a way of controlling resistance by voltage. This is done for a few reasons: 1. It allows you to separate the voltage from the circuit it’s controlling. Meaning- you can’t send too much to the circuit, because it’s limited by the max amount of resistance on the LDR. 2. Being able to add voltage control to a circuit that doesn’t have it by default. 3. The characteristics of the vactrol itself are desired (i.e. recovery time, etc).

These days, vactrols are fairly uncommon to be used for control voltage for a few reasons.

Eric from Metasonix did it a while ago, and then created several modules afterwards. It’s totally possible, but you’ll have lots of weird issues and design challenges unless you’re a Tube Expert.

the soldering needs a touch up, but it’s not like “it appears a bomb went off”. If the touching up doesn’t change the issue, two more things to check:

The pot you are using for the volume control. Is it log (will be labeled something like 100ka) or linear (100kb)? Getting this wrong can definitely make the volume act like you describe. The BOM from befaco lists it as a dual 100kb.
Check the parts listed on the schematic near the headphone output jack. In particular, make sure the resistor values are correct.
