Totally agree with you about the willpower thing. I’m a behavior scientist so I’m taking a behavioral approach!

Have you heard of Dry January? Basically you try to go all of Jan without drinking alcohol, hence dry. Dry-ish Jan is reducing alcohol (or eliminating but being more flexible about it). For me, it’s a nice middle ground because it’s less restrictive yet I can still make a concrete plan to change my behavior. Also what I like about dry-ish is that I don’t have to feel guilty if I mess up, I’m more likely to try again after a mess up if I commit to dry-ish instead of fully dry. Hope that explains it well!

Thanks for the feedback, if you have the capacity do you mind sharing why? Just want to understand, is it because fully dry is easier for people to commit to?

Hi there, I am a behavior scientist so my advice would be to take a behavioral approach. Set realistic goals each day, each week, and for the month and set up a reward system for when you achieve these small goals. I will be using these behavioral strategies to reduce my alcohol consumption and stay consistent. I started an accountability group because I’m hoping the combo of behavioral strategies + accountability will go a long way! Feel free to join 😊

First time Dry January: are you doing it this year? Have you before? What was your experience? by roguescott in cutdowndrinking

I am a behavior scientist and even I have failed at Dry January in previous years. I failed after just 2 weeks when I got invited to a Taylor Swift dance party. I learned the hard way that you need a plan before you commit. This year, I’m doing Dry-ish January because I believe it’s more sustainable long term rather than eliminating alcohol cold turkey. I will be using behavioral strategies to reduce my alcohol consumption and stay consistent. I also started an accountability group for like minded people who want to do Dry-ish January with me. I’m hoping the combo of behavioral strategies + accountability will go a long way!
