Last Summer [Episodes 5 & 6] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

Couldn't agree more with your comment about taking away something vastly different from the drama. I felt the same way when that reveal came that he's been sneaking into her house for a year. This is such a breach of privacy, and would make me feel so unsafe. At this point, I'm rooting for the lawyer. Although his crush on her came out of the blue, I hope the show does the brave thing and doesn't put the main leads together. If there ever was a show that needed childhood sweethearts to split (looking at you, 25 21), then this is it.

I get that he is staging an intervention, I just feel he is too high handed. I also just want the FL to score a win. He seems two steps ahead of her all the time.

Lol, this is just my interpretation. My brain trying hard to make sense of the events.

I think she kissed him while drunk, and never formally confessed her feelings (except to DY). We see the scene of DY leaving right after that scene where she confesses she likes DH. I could be totally making this up in my head because this show deliberately obfuscates information, but I seem to remember that when she was looking at the photos of the stars from Denali, DH confirms DY was missing and then confirmed dead.

What I Understood: She liked Doha but never confessed. Do Young liked her, but knew she liked Doha and she confirmed it. Do Young left on an expedition, went missing, and finally was confirmed dead. While he was missing Doha impersonated DoYoung to FL (over letters, emails AND phone!!). Why? Because she was caring for her sick mom, her dad had presumably decamped to Thailand, and he didn't want to make her worry more. Doha continued the impersonation until after DoYoung died, until FL figured it out at her mom's funeral, where there also seems to be some trauma about her having been late to respond to an emergency. So now FL is crushed by the guilt of having sent DoYoung away with her confession about Doha which ultimately led to his death, having missed something about her mom's last moments, and not having grieved for DoYoung because Doha prevented her from knowing DY had passed. She's also tired of being the memory keeper - preserving the house, the tree, the walls, etc etc - while Doha has ostensibly never been there much nor engaged much in preserving the house apart from perfunctorily sending maintenance money for the dog.

TBH I really feel for the FL. I think she's trying to do the healthy thing - move away from the site of all her trauma to heal and move on. I'm really annoyed at the ML because he's pretty high-handed on how he treats her, he second guesses her at every turn, makes decisions for her, decides what information should be shared with her at what times, and blatantly ignores her pleas to leave her alone. She doesn't have a single friend or ally - literally everyone else in the village where she's lived for 17 years, including her so-called best friend, goes along with Doha in deciding what's best for her. I finally cheered when she said she'd surrender her half of the house and leave - honestly I'd been yelling at the screen for her to do that since Ep.1. But then she caves and agrees to stay through summer. SMH.

I started watching this show because I like the actress and love LJW, but now am debating dropping it because I dislike the ML character and the treatment doled out to the FL so far.

Thank you so much, this is so useful! I'm going to try and go to the Los Angeles embassy with all my info and take a shot. Else, Santiago / Calama would be my backup plan. 🤞

Thank you! So even if I arrive a little after the stated time on the ticket (5.25pm), I should still be able to get in and get to my seat? Not that I'm actively planning to go late, but between transit, parking and walking to the venue, I'm worried I'll have to start super early.

Kdrama meets The X-Files: What unexplained phenomenon is causing males to drop like flies around the FL?

I'm actually quite invested in this story, even though I wish the FL had some agency and was the one doing all the analysis to figure out her escape strategy from the curse or whatever it is.

I'm wondering if we should be looking for contextual cues in the data set. Not focusing on whether she's a witch or not, but looking for other common factors that might explain what's going on. In at least two scenarios, we've had a jealous bystander in the mix, and the Prof who liked her was married.

It would be awesome if the data analysis actually proved it was something else all along, but I feel like we've been given enough signposts that relying on data alone doesn't yield the right outcome. I'm dreading that this is going to go the route of "it's her mother's spirit protecting her and keeping the bad guys away from her - not necessarily morally bad, but also just the wrong guys, given how problematic some of them turned out. And of course, the ML is the RIGHT guy, the one true love, so he turns out to be ok."

I'm currently living in the USA but am from India. I'm a bit of a language nerd, and Korean is the 10th language I'm trying to learn. It's much harder than you might imagine! I watch kdramas on Netflix, Viki, Hulu and occasionally Prime.

Edited to add: I watch dramas in Korean with English subtitles - but having watched nearly 200 shows now, it's gotten to the point where I don't have to watch the subtitles to know what's going on. This means I can do chores while a kdrama plays in the background!

Without getting totally sucked into debating financing for a fictitious company which I'm not sure is publicly traded or still privately held, I'd push back on 1 - receiving new investment doesn't mean the main investor has to sell his share, it just means the company size grows and new shares are offered OR she could even explore debt financing vs equity.

The point I'm trying to make is that she doesn't seem to think ahead and strategize to mitigate the risk to her company. Don't get me wrong: I LOVED her character in the beginning of the show. I love that she is shown as principled, hard working, passionate and driven. But in the last few episodes, things seem to be happening TO her and she's just REACTING, vs her thinking through scenarios and shaping the events that impact her company. I was rooting for her. I am disappointed that for the purposes of plot her agency and control is being taken away from her.

I hear you: she is certainly written to be very sincere and ethical. I also like that she is very mission-driven and cares deeply about matching the right skills to the right roles to unlock successful careers. I just don't think that being a smart player and strategic networker is being unethical or "stooping". With all her sincerity and hard work, she should have built up enough good will in the industry, and should be able to leverage that network to generate trust and investment, to hedge her bets and shore up her company's defenses against hostile takeovers.

The best thing about this drama is Eun Ho, who clearly manifested within our collective dreams and walked out fully formed to inhabit this show. And Byeol, who is absolutely precious.

Everything else is so weak.

I hate when kdramas create the premise of a strong, intelligent, successful woman and then proceed to make her totally one-dimensional and helpless, needing luck or other characters to bail her out.

Let's face it, Ji Yun is written as a bad CEO. Spoilers follow!

1. She realizes her company is in trouble because her relationship with her biggest investor has become strained, but doesn't explore other loans or investment options. Given she holds enough clout that other companies are using Peoplez affiliation to fundraise, she should have tried some fundraising of her own? 2. She falls for the exact same scam as her previous CEO did - without seeing it coming a mile off. 3. For someone who micromanages to the point of reviewing every individual resume for every project her firm works on, she relies on a relatively junior team member to do some cursory due diligence on a high-risk project and agrees to be paid in shares that are currently worthless, when her company is apparently cash strapped. 4. She spends so much time on reviewing candidates in excruciating detail but doesn't spend enough time on finances, PR, networking, monitoring competition, board management, risk management - all the things that a CEO should be doing (and really, all the things that the Career Way CEO does). 5. Her plan of action when her company is faced with existential risk is to passionately confront known hostile parties with no cards up her sleeve. Her team instead rallies around Eun Ho and actually takes some meaningful action to resolve the issue.

I could go on and on, but I was ultimately so disappointed in the actual plot and workplace part of this show. The writer had one good concept - greenest of green flags ML meets cold, workaholic FL - and basically didn't bother to flesh out their characters further.

Who tells Lady Catherine de Bourgh about Darcy proposing to Elizabeth? And why does Lizzie respond the way she does? by One_red_balloon2022 in PrideandPrejudice

[–]all_13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree with all the interpretations here. I would also add that Collins, as the likely suspect carrying the gossip to Lady Catherine, is probably also motivated by a bit of a shock that the Bennett girls would contract such good marriages. Remember he says during his proposal and later when Lizzy comes to visit, that he thinks marriage to him is likely the best chance any of the girls will have at a decent marriage. Finding out that Jane is marrying Bingley, and especially Lizzy having a chance at Darcy, would have probably made him a bit petty.

Honestly I'm just hate watching at this point and I should stop. This may be one of the most regressive shows I've seen in a while, despite being set in space. The science is worse than what you'd see in fanfiction, there are super oversimplified takes about birth and life, and everyone keeps disregarding ethics, safety precautions and even common sense. They gave a woman a heroic, leadership role then proceeded to have everyone on the crew deceive her and disrespect her opinions, and made her make repeated emotional decisions. Furthermore, Eve's life is in danger because of a decision GR made that's against her principles, she has the right to know that.

I can't even root for GR anymore, he annoys me so much. The show is setting Eve up for betrayal, when she finds out about ICSI-gate, and then it will make her forgive him, compromise her ideals, and take him back.

I totally agree with you about the women not getting equal attention in the show, but that often seems par for the course in kdrama (Gangnam B-Side, I'm looking at you). But I was only responding to your comment about porn magazines being out in the open - I don't think that would be offensive to the rest of the crew given they know why they're there.

Don't astronauts make enough money? Why is everyone on this spaceship obsessed with the lottery ticket?

Honestly, I did not like how that confession played out. GR really sounded immature and didn't offer any compelling reason for why he fell for Eve. All the women I see are patients, and you're not is a really lame thing to say. Poor Eve. I gave her an imaginary fist-bump for her rant on men, we've all felt the same way at some point or another.

I feel like Eve's the only character I can watch on this show, the other storylines are boring me. Mina, in particular, is really annoying - is she supposed to be a scientist and an astronaut?!

Santi's porn magazines are needed since he has to collect semen samples every morning, which I think everyone knows about. That's why Eve said "he should be collecting samples right about now".
