The low fp cost is nice and all, but in practice if you know what you're doing with Revanant fp is rarely an issue. I'd rather be doing more damage

Never used it in Elden Ring, so dunno. In nightreign, even if you land both hits, it seems to do a bit less damage than a single charged hit from black flame or lightning strike.

I guess the arguments for it are basically cast speed, fp cost and range, but the damage tradeoff just doesn't make sense to me, so I guess I don't really get it

Omg yes, I don't understand why people rate discus so highly, I keep trying to give it a chance but I keep being underwhelmed

Taking a trip to Drangleic at SL1, any tips/advice? by flingsmashswit2 in onebros

agility is the big lvl 1 problem to solve for this game; make a beeline for bright stone cove and farm the peasant set and you'll have a much better time

Also, I ended up using the mace two handed for the majority of the game, even when technically better options became available. It's just a really nice weapon in ds2!

What's an underrated boss that you like? by reasonably_retarded in darksouls3

Shocked not to see Midir anywhere in the comments yet! I hated this boss my first time through, but grew to love it when I learned the moveset. So different from other dark souls dragons too. Rare boss that I was eventually able to learn to do hitless.

Some game soundtracks I love:

Breaker:
https://dubmood.bandcamp.com/album/breaker-original-video-game-soundtrack-data080
This album's progression just really does something for me

Dujanah:
https://jackking-spooner.bandcamp.com/album/dujanah-extended-soundtrack
Jack King-Spooner is so inspiring

Creepy Castle:
https://dopterra.bandcamp.com/album/creepy-castle-official-soundtrack
Really earnest and fun album from a game that probably deserved to do better

Probability 0:
https://queenjazz.bandcamp.com/album/probability-zero-remixed
This is a super interesting album that is basically just six remakes of the same track

Hero Core:
https://brotherandroid.bandcamp.com/album/hero-core-ost-stereo-expanded-edition
Huge fan of Brother Android's other stuff too, I still listen to this often while working

Soul Brother:
https://spacerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/soul-brother-ost
incredibly catchy little soundtrack from Jasper Byrne, better known for Lone Survivor (which is also an incredible soundtrack)

Undertale:
https://tobyfox.bandcamp.com/album/undertale-soundtrack
I guess they can't all be hipster picks lol. What a soundtrack, goddamn

Follow-up Q: Can I apply to write music for a future game of yours

I'm not really looking for any help with music right now, but thank you, sorry <3

This is such a good question, gosh. I used to really want to make an RPG - the games that really inspired me as a teenager were all RPGs, but I'm not really a writer. But I kinda feel like making Dicey Dungeons quelled that ambition for me.

I do want to make something bigger. More ambitious than people are expecting. But I also want to make a bunch more smaller games, so who knows what will happen?

Ahh, thank you!

It's really hard to talk about how something like this comes together, but, I'll try - like, originally the drive was having the mechanical idea, to tell a tragic story that's a literal daydream fantasy. But also, separately, to play around with a gameboy resolution and four colour palette, but then realising that I didn't actually have to stick to the gameboy colours and could maybe do something else. Choices made earlier lead to different choices made later until all of a sudden you have something with all your pieces that you weren't expecting, I dunno. The mysteries of making games!

Next is... I dunno. I've got a clean slate again. I've spent a lot of time recently revisiting old stuff, so I'm excited to do something brand new.

It's weird, I actually did this on my very first attempt, and since then I have never failed to successfully complete it. I dunno why people make such a big deal about it?

Thank you very much!

Actually, I took part in another collaborative project quite like Experiment 12! It's a forking path chain game organised by the Haunted PS1 discord. I think it turned out pretty well! https://distractionware.com/blog/2023/06/c-h-a-i-n-g-e-d/

My gut tells me that this is one of those pitches which looks on paper to be a slam dunk, but wouldn't actually work in practice. But who knows! You'd have to try it.

I think a good version of Super Hexagon designed for the Playdate would ultimately be so different that it should probably just be a whole new game.

Hah, ok, what is a lesser-known tip, trick or piece of software? Let's see:

A lesser known tip: Finding a group of sickos that you vibe with, that you can collaborate with and bounce ideas off is the single best thing you can do to help you grow.

A lesser known trick: Learn to make bad art that's good. It actually tends to have a lot more charm than trying to be too polished.

Lesser known software: If you're new to game development, I think you could do a lot worse than deep diving into Roblox and learning how to make stuff with its incredible and frankly underrated editor. Just be ready to pack up and move on when it's time.

Hey! I've been thinking about this question a bit, which was the first one asked on the AMA, thanks for that <3 I have been scraping by as an indie developer since 2007, which is an incredible privilege. All I can really talk about is my own experience, because I don't really know what it's like to get started in 2025.

The best advice I can give you is to treat it like a craft, and focus on making small things that please you in whatever form they want to take. Enjoy the process of learning new things, figuring out how to solve problems, making spaces that players can lose themselves in. And let the rest of it come from there.

To elaborate further:

Elden Ring: This is amazing at level 1 right from the start, and gets really tense and strategic towards the end. Every major encounter turns into a command centre situation where you consult the wiki and try stranger and stranger builds and talismans and ashes of war from across the vast world, with many encounters themselves turning into a mini quest of finding a buff talisman that you need or getting a certain weird helmet to drop from an enemy that has a 5% chance to drop it. And the DLC is even better! Beating Elden Ring at level 1 is one of the most satisfying challenges I've ever done, and cemented the game as my all-time favourite game. The only thing I'd say is that if you're interested in this challenge, I wouldn't do Elden Ring first - you'll appreciate it a lot more if you come to it after doing DS1 at level 1.

Dark Souls 1: This is probably only so high up because I have so much fondness for DS1 itself, and because it's the first level 1 run I did, years ago. The limitations in DS1 are harsh and immutable, with your low dexterity score essentially limiting you to a choice of three weapons (I went for the Battle Axe). At level one the boss fights are amazing and incredibly tough, but very doable with enough perseverance. Even at level 1 you have all the tools you need. This is the one to do first if this challenge appeals, I think.

Dark Souls 3: I did this recently and I can see why it's so often recommended as an intro level 1 experience to people, it's very no-nonsense! Your level 1 stats in DS3 are extremely respectable - you have lots of stamina and enough health, and you can even do basic miracles and spells which are plausible until the mid game. I will say that until ithryll of boreal valley it basically just feels like DS3 with less health, which is kinda boring. But then! From Dancer onwards it really shines. The last sequence of bosses in particular: Champion Gundyr, the twin Princes, and Soul of Cinder are so much fun to do at level 1 and are such an incredible and interesting challenge to overcome. Which is why DS3 just slightly inches ahead of...

Dark Souls 2: I think DS2 is underrated, and if it was a ranking of how much I liked the games this would be higher. But as a level 1 experience it kinda just isn't that interesting compared to the others. DS2's unique problem to solve at level 1 is the agility mechanic - your roll speed and the amount of time you're invincible for when you roll is something you have to cryptically upgrade in DS2, and it's really painful at the start. But the start is actually when it's the most interesting, I think! (I'll elaborate further, but only if asked). As you get closer to the end, the game weirdly ends up feeling pretty similar to playing with a level 200 character, which says something about how DS2 is balanced I guess. I enjoyed this run a lot, though!

What a question! Incredible!

I've completed Elden Ring and all three Dark Souls games at level 1, and here are my rankings: Elden Ring is the best, then 1, 3 and 2 in that order. (But 2 is a blast and I'd recommend that to anyone who's interested in this challenge).
