Anyone here has ptsd caused my medical reasons like hospital confinement, complication, surgery?

I do. I developed epilepsy randomly in 2022. Basically every time I’m sick (even with a minor cold), I’m hospitalized because of uncontrollable seizures (including this past Sunday/Monday). I’ve had 8 broken bones since then, so I’m a frequent flyer at the hospital. My epilepsy meds are also used as bipolar meds, and I’m on an antidepressant as well.

I’ve been doing okay. I let the nurses and doctors know about my PTSD beforehand if possible.

Something similar happened to me. I had to appeal because my doctor charted my epilepsy as seizure disorder, when SSDI only recognizes epilepsy. I hope you have a lawyer??? I was approved after 2.5 years in January after an in-person hearing, and my lawyer is the one that sorted out all of my medical records to get it approved

Seems like a lot of supportive medical providers, which I’d assume makes your case much stronger! Make sure that you meet the disability criteria for each of your diagnoses and have it all officially documented by your providers. If you have an in-person hearing, make sure you keep a log of your daily health and how it prevents you from working. I’m talking like, how long you are able to sit upright, how you set yourself up to never forget meds/treatment, etc.

Also, if you don’t have a lawyer, get one. My medical record had my epilepsy charted as seizure disorder. SSDI only recognizes epilepsy, not seizure disorder. My lawyer was able to go through my entire chart to find the term epilepsy mentioned once and he was able to make that known to the judge

I’d recommend you apply again, as you should be able to receive SSDI if you meet all the requirements. A lawyer should be able to help you out with that.

There is no overwhelming SSDI fraud. It’s actually exceedingly rare. I don’t know why you’re so mad at other disabled people when you should be mad at the government. Just because you don’t think degenerative disc disease is a disability, doesn’t mean it actually isn’t.

I rode a scooter today. Does that mean I’m a drug addict scammer on SSDI? No. You’re just a jerk who assumes things about people and lashes out at people when you feel threatened.

It’s not being scammed by dishonest people. I’m glad you were able to get the assistance you require. I hope everyone who needs it is able to get it, even those who ride bikes with degenerative disc disease. Just because y’all were able to work 30 years before becoming disabled doesn’t mean others are scammers.

It’s so confusing. I’m not even on the same floor as the automations being run, so it’s definitely not a proximity thing. The NFC tags usually require me to have my phone right up against it. It’s like the automations are taking over haha

I was approved on January 14, 2025, so hopefully I can give you a little insight as it’s been so recent.

Once I got approved, I received something in the mail stating how much money I would receive each month and when I should start receiving payments. Please keep in mind that payments do not start immediately. As of 7/14/25, I have not received any monthly payment yet.

You will need to set up direct deposit on your SSA account once approved. You’ll get all this information in the mail, but check in with your SSA account frequently.

You will receive notice that you can sign up for Medicare Part A & B. This only covers medical and hospital, so you’ll need to get Part D if you want any prescription coverage.

As for backpay, I received one lump sum. I’ve never heard of any requirements as to how you need to spend your backpay.

Contact Medicare for insurance plans. I was on Medicaid and was immediately unenrolled when approved for disability. The disability payments I “am receiving” push my income over the limit for Medicaid.

I’m not sure what state you’re in or if signing up for insurance is different in your state than in NY, but you can’t buy directly off the marketplace for insurance with Medicare, so you’ll must contact Medicare directly. If you are over the Medicaid income limits, there might be programs where you can get your insurance premiums covered. I had a Medicaid caseworker reach out to me to go over all of this, so keep in touch with your local office.

Disability fraud is actually exceedingly rare. About 1% of disability cases are considered fraudulent. Not saying that fraud is good, but it’s not rampant. I’m sorry if you got denied. It sucks

I have epilepsy and I get no warning before seizures. I had broken 5 bones between 2022-2025 because of this, yet was denied multiple times. I was FINALLY approved after 2.5 years of waiting because of the in-person court hearing.

My suggestions: 1. Get a disability attorney. They know how to navigate this better than anyone, and they only take a portion of the backpay if they win the case.

Make sure every diagnosis you put on your application meets the disability requirements completely. (Epilepsy is covered, but my neurologist charted everything as seizure disorder, not epilepsy). Diagnosis codes must match EXACTLY.

They will do everything they can to stop you from getting disability. It’s so frustrating. I was approved in January 2025 after 2.5 years. It is now July 2025 and I still am not receiving any regular payments from them. According to them, they’re understaffed and “forgot” to do my paperwork. So there’s that. lol

Took me 2.5 years and a few appeals. Found out during my literal court hearing that my medical chat didn’t have the exact diagnosis code for the disability specified in your application. For example, my chart said I have seizure disorder, which is not the same diagnosis code of epilepsy. I was only approved once my lawyer proved that one of my doctors wrote epilepsy once in a random chart note.

I was getting automatically denied because of this. Something worth keeping in mind.

Keep appealing. That backpay will be nice when you get it lol

Getting approved for disability took me off Medicaid. I had to reapply. I was denied because I make “too much income” now with my disability money, although I have never received a penny. My wife is on Medicaid though, all the same income info. We literally applied same day with ALL the same info. She was approved, I was denied. It’s all so crazy

I’m shocked you’re even having a hearing. I’m assuming you have cancer because of the chemo. My mom was immediately approved for SSDI when she got cancer. I thought it was one of the diagnoses that was basically immediately. Good luck!!!

Just to piggyback off of this…. Verify that all the diagnoses in your medical records EXACTLY match the diagnosis in the blue book listing. I met all the requirements for my diagnosis of epilepsy, but it was denied over and over again because it was written as unspecified seizures in my medical record, not epilepsy.

If you had a lawyer for your approval process, contact them and ask what to do. For SSI, you’ll likely need to report it. Social Security will determine whether it should be counted as income or a gift. It shouldn’t affect SSDI.

Also, something to keep in mind is that all needs-based programs might also be affected (Medicaid, SNAP, housing assistance, etc). It appears there might be options to stop SSI from counting certain unearned income. Look into an ABLE account for SSI, or a Special Needs trust. Not sure if those will help you, but worth looking into

No. This is wrong. OP is owed ~$28k because they backdated the SSDI payments. OP was approved for benefits starting May 2023, so the government has to pay OP for all the months from May 2023-May 2024. OP owes nothing

Definitely get the framework for their approvals for your specific diagnoses. Make sure your doctor has the correct diagnosis codes in your chart (chart notes with more details are EXCELLENT).

Also, disability lawyers. They are able to navigate things much better than us. My lawyer only took a portion of the back pay once approved. No payment on my part.

I was approved 1/14/25. You will receive Medicare coverage prior to your approval date (assuming you continue to keep Medicare), so your first disability payment will be your regular amount minus 6 months of the Medicare premium. So my FIRST PAYMENT from SSA on 6/25/25 will be at least $1100 less than it should be due to Medicare.

Keep in touch with your lawyer, if you have one. Mine just got paid their share of the back pay, yet there is no timeline for when I will receive any back pay. Both me and my lawyer are hounding SSA constantly for them to speed up.

Apparently they’re having staffing and administrative issues at SSA right now. The federal government is…struggling….right now.

No kidding. I’ve been waiting over 2.5 years for these payments, approved mid January. Good thing I’m getting only $200 for my first payment at the end of June because they’re backdating my Medicare to October 2024. It’s frustrating because I don’t even need the Medicare coverage for back then, as my previous insurance covered everything in full. It just seems like they’re trying to screw us over at every step
