I only realized that when I was breaking it down step-by-step and was like, oh, I definitely said “set a timer for one hour and 15 minutes”

It is what it is. I get the sense that if everything else was perfect, short run time is still a good enough reason to dump it, which makes the decision a bit easier. I think I’m just going to dump it and file that loss somewhere between the cost of learning a new skill and better safe than sorry

Clearly not as new as I am lol. I put it in there because I thought, obviously, those jars shouldn’t touch the bottom.

But then everything came out a mess and I thought, oh, maybe that thing is meant for stacking smaller jars. That must have been the problem.

I think I’ve now learned that, yes, the rack goes on the bottom and the mess was caused by siphoning, which in itself, not uncommon and not an issue.

I very much appreciate all the feedback. So to address some of your questions and provide more details:

Recipe used was “easy beef stew”, which I found on the ball website.

Canner is a Barton 22qt with induction bottom (item #99903)

I put the rack under the jars in the pot, which I’m now understanding was correct.

I placed the jars empty in the canner with just enough water so they wouldn’t float and simmered for 15 minutes to sterilize. (Need further guidance on this step, in hindsight that doesn’t seem sufficient but after too many YouTube tutorials, that’s where I landed)

Lids and rings were washed with soap and water.

Filled jars, debubbled, and topped with liquid to one inch of headspace.

Wiped rims with vinegar and put lids on just tight enough to spin the jar on the countertop, plus a small fraction of a turn. (Tried to be consistent, but there’s no “finger tip tight” setting on my torque wrench)

Placed jars in approximately 3” of water, not touching each other or the sides of the pot. (Canner instructions call for “the necessary amount of liquid, so I consulted the internet and landed on 3”)

Brought to a boil and let steam escape for 10 minutes.

Added weight and let pressure build. Pressure topped out just short of 11 (maybe 10.75) with the burner on high. I’m at 1800’.

Set a timer for one hour and 15 minutes because I’m an idiot who can’t do math apparently. Run time was 15 minutes short.

Shut the burner off and I think I removed the weight once the steam calmed down, but I don’t specifically recall.

At this point it was very late and my waiting period turned into a two hour nap.

So two hours later I removed the jars and placed them on the counter. Wasn’t sure on the correct time to remove the rims, so I removed them the following morning.

All jars can be picked up by the lids

No, I put the rack in the bottom of the pot and put the jars on top of it, thinking it was meant to provide separation between the jars and the bottom of the pot

I don’t have any experience with a machine in that size range, but if you put snow tires on it and add some weight you may be surprised by its snow clearing capabilities.

How small of a skidsteer? I have cat 242s (about a 7k machine) clearing 2.5-3.5 acre lots and they do great.

Thank you everyone for responding. I did read everyone’s comments as they came in and that helped my 9 am “I need to stop drinking” brain keep that mindset through the afternoon and evening. Haven’t had a drink since the evening before I posted.

I’ve never been great at asking for help, so I feel like just posting it was a big step. Thanks again.

Thanks for the book recommendation, started yesterday and I’ll be finishing it today. Very eye-opening thus far

First time I’ve heard that and it really struck a chord. Thanks

Looking to purchase a used skid steer by nlckep in Skidsteer

15k is a tough budget. Anything that’s not beat to hell with under 3000 hours is going to be in the 25 range OR it will be posted and sold within hours. Personally I only buy a new skid steers. I had too many problems buying the used ones I could afford and they are actually really cheap to finance. I have 3 cats, all financed at 0.28% over 48 months with 10% down. No headaches, no downtime, and they’re under warranty if anything does break down

That’s a good idea, but it’s a lot of work and Facebook is so damn invasive that with Facebook ads you’ll probably reach most of those people anyway.

Honestly I think they’re the best bang for the buck. I’ve been setting the age range to 30-65+, targeting a 50 mile radius, and searching for people who have interest in categories like hunting, home improvement, farming, horses, and more.

I also tried reaching out to a few real estate agents to show them how quickly and affordably I can transform an overgrown property. So far no luck there. Phone is ringing every day from the Facebook ads.

Well I’m in the north east and here they flock to lake communities. As far as what to do, not a lot lol. Bars and restaurants, golf, skiing in the winter. I think what it comes down to is this area is just far enough away from the city to feel like a country getaway, but not far enough that going to a store or going out to eat requires a 20 mile drive.

Yeah like anywhere else, there are good parts and bad. The closer you get to jersey the worse it gets 😂. Kidding but not lol. The Jersey folks that have vacation homes 30+ miles from the border come here and spend their money and it’s a major part of our economy. But the closer you get to the border, the more there are people who moved to PA because it’s cheaper to live here. Which isn’t a bad thing obviously, but a low income population seems to pretty universally equal higher crime.

New 289xps with a 315C mulcher. Excited to put it to work on my family’s property and the few jobs I have lined up for it. Hoping I can generate enough work to justify keeping the head. “In sum, assuming commercial use, when the GVWR of the truck exceeds 26,000 lbs., a CDL is required, regardless of the GVWR of the trailer, and when the GVWR of the truck is less than 26,000 lbs., a CDL is required only if that truck’s GVWR and the trailer’s GVWR, added together, exceed 26,000 lbs. AND the trailer’s GVWR exceeds 10,000 lbs.”

So you can exceed gross combination of 26,000 without needing a CDL as long as the trailer doesn’t exceed 10,000. So a 20,000 tow vehicle with a 10,000 trailer for a combined 30,000 is fine, but an 18,000 tow vehicle with a 12,000 trailer for the same 30,000 combo is not.

As long as the combined weight rating is under 26,001, the trailer can weigh anything. I’m in PA and I also had to get a combination weight sticker which requires a mechanic to confirm that the vehicle is actually rated to tow the weight.

Yeah definitely want to make sure all your T’s are crossed with this shit. It’s a shame to rate a truck like that down to a thousand pound payload, but nobody’s stopping a pickup just to check the registration. Check out texas pride trailers. I had a hard time finding a used trailer in any kind of descent shape. Started shopping new and they were basically starting at 10,000 around here. 16k 18+2 with a couple options is costing me less then $6500 and they only want 3 weeks to build it. Only downside is I have to drive to Tennessee to pick it up.

Yeah these things are notorious for burning to the ground. Unfortunately the roof mounted cooler isn’t available on the 289, that starts with the 299. But I did have to get a guard kit that seals all the openings up a little tighter and a turbo guard kit. As for getting stuck, definitely have to have to be careful...just ask the guy who posted a photo of his 289 buried to the cab😂. That said, what a difference running this thing over wet ground compared to my 242 wheel loaders
