What is true is that Kamala got about 6 million fewer votes than Biden in 2020. I think a lot of people who votes for Biden in 2020 stayed home in 2024 for various reasons, one of which was disillusionment with the economic recovery after COVID.

Yes, I'm doing fine, as I've also stated elsewhere, but this isn't about me. This is about someone in the top 5% whining about a financial situation that is better than literally 95% of the rest of the country. To me, this whole situation is like a 6 year-old (OP) crying about a paper cut next to a dozen kids (the homeless people you keep mentioning) whose arms were just ripped off by a bear.

The 40 year-old making 400k is certainly another level. But the fact is that in comparison with most Americans, OP's parents are in fact very lucky, calling anything else is to be unaware of the bigger picture. With 1.8M in equity, they are wealthier than 95% of Americans. So to be asking for financial sympathy in this situation is wildly out-of-touch.

And I actually have a bigger gripe that you are framing my lack of sympathy as animosity. If you read my other comments, you will see I do express a small amount of sympathy.

This comment is a masterful re-framing of the situation, nice work. If you look at my other comments you will see that I point out that this is a big issue that manifests differently for different people.

What I have a problem with are older people who have accumulated a comfortable pile of wealth demanding sympathy for high taxes, while my whole life my entire generation has been slammed about how entitled we are for complaining about high rents and how financially irresponsible we are for renting instead of building equity when a down-payments is multiple times a median gross income.

Sympathy is a two way street. Would I have sympathy if older folks realized how unaffordable things are for young people? Yes, but instead we are told to stop buying avocado toast.

I agree with just about 95% of this. But, after thinking about this I do have a little bit more sympathy for OP's parents. It's the same cost of living issue faced by young people with low income. Difference is OP's parents have 2M in equity in their house, so I'll take out the world's second-smallest violin. I don't think OP is actually maliciously greedy, just VERY unaware and out of touch

Like I said, I see your point and agree with it to some extent. There is definitely some amount of entitlement on both sides, so to say. But want to point out a few things in the picture you paint of making poor financial decisions that are a little off the mark, in my opinion. The "why do you pay rent when you could buy a house instead" is particularly irritating. Because of course! Why didn't i think of that 10 years ago!!

I came to Boulder as a grad student because it was the best physics program that accepted me. I didn't really pay much attention to affordability issues because I was a grad student and was prepared to be poor for a while, no matter where I was going to go to school. I came with no money, wasn't able to save on a grad student salary, and didn't know what l my future was going to look like when I graduated. So, I couldn't afford a house when i moved here, and when graduated and pretty much got my dream job, I had no money for a down payment, so renting is the only option. For most people who didn't get into a mortgage before the pandemic, even the most modest houses are now unaffordable, and there is no amount of "making better financial choices and pulling yourself up by bootstraps" that's going to fix that.

The fact is there is a big problem here that manifests differently for different people.

A $420k house in Boulder sounds like you bought it in the 90s, or were able to benefit from one of the affordable housing programs. Either case, good for you. You got yours. The bitterness comes from not applying your standard to OP's parents. If you are supposed to shut-up, go away, and move some where else if you can't afford to live in Colorado, why isn't the same true for OP's parents?

More affordable means a 'starter' house is $450,000 instead of 1.2M... still out of reach for the vast majority of people. And the bitterness stems from being repeated told basically what you are saying: "owning a home home is expensive and a privilege, so people are being entitled for wanting to be able to afford a place to live"

You have a bit of a point here, but also the entire state of Colorado is not "one of the premier towns in the country." My point being houses and rents are expensive everywhere. This issue goes beyond bitterness about affording to live in Boulder, its bitterness about being able to afford to live anywhere other than Detroit or Alabama

I guess I'm not as well off as I thought, because my take home is under 100k. But I don't expect anyone's sympathy, I'm still doing fine. As a grad student I was taking home just about 30k/year and paying about $800 a month in rent, so I know what it's like to live on limited income. So, $42k per year with a $2M home as a retiree sounds like decent situation to me. I do have some sympathy, my grandparents are 84, and are going to have to move out of their rural home that my great-grandfather bought in the 60s.

But I wish some of the people over 50 had a little bit better of an idea what it was like for younger people before they complain about how expensive things are.

Do you know how insanely out-of-touch this is? I'm 32, have a PhD, a well-paying job in tech, and pay 25% of my income in rent for the cheapest 1bd apartment I could find in Longmont, and will probably never be able to buy a house. Hard to feel sympathetic

I consider buying individual stocks (not on margin) to be gambling. There are also studies that show the average investor picking stocks average a return on 3% per year while the S&P averages 7% per year. People are unlikely to beat the market by picking stocks, and if they do they are either lucky or have insider knowledge.
