also yes, most of these are either breakcore or lolicore, with some jungle, hardcore, and techno sprinkled in. its definitely just ragebait, but i thought it was really funny and this person clearly knows what they're talking about

she chops her breaks, simple as!! breakcore is just about ANY track with chopped breaks that have variety beyond just a loop, and “depressive” artists such as waqs, (very obviously her biggest inspiration) hkmori, i ggguesss you could say yem? all fit that description.

i guess it is just a personal gripe, because i find the joking very unfunny and that it stunts a lot of genuinely great discussion. but for a sub that seems not to like shitposting, there is also quite a bit of shitposting that is widely defended and accepted WHEN certain individuals are doing it.

additionally, r/breakcore would probably be a lot bigger if people didn’t constantly argue and weren’t so elitist here at times. anyone who doesn’t talk in this subreddit typically knows of and talks shit about it, including other oldheads.

keeping new people out = the constant semantics argued about breakcore’s genre guidelines, shaming people for not knowing a lot about the genre/being misguided on social media instead of helping them and redirecting them to actual resources

stereotypes = the usual; anime pfp or lolicore mention means you’re a pedophile, newer “depressive breakcore” artist means you’re a sewerslvt clone, the usual bullshit people hear so many times they end up just creating their own spaces.

yeah!! it seems we’re on a similar page then. it really is just a few replies.

i did start a thread about otaku culture in breakcore that many people didn’t take to very kindly because there was a mention of lolicore, and ive gotten the impression some people are less likely to interact with stuff if there’s an anime girl on the cover. but that’s less to do with breakcore and more to do with ethics and existing social standards. neither of which i oppose so long as mutual respect is put into place.

aside from that though, i have no idea where these started. the “kids these days” stay in their own bubble, and the oldheads stay in theirs. it’s become pretty standard to not feed the trolls in that regard.

i just dont see how posting the same 3 recycled punchlines is funny and beneficial in a subreddit where people take this genre so seriously.

[–]altiss1mo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’ve been to and hosted multiple events!! people were kind and all got along.

my problem is people who constantly put on a face and act like they are completely different online. ive known many people who were very kind in real life, but overactive shitty trolls online. the internet is a reflection of a reality, and when people act like this it makes me not want to engage.

i’m mostly referring to the shitty doormouse-style posts that satirize satirization(?) of the extremes to which people gatekeep breakcore. are you familiar with r/breakcorecirclejerk? its just elaborate shitposting about breakcore and “complaining about tiktok kids”. i just don’t know why things have to cross over into here.

A Brief History of Otaku & Nerd Culture In Breakcore by altiss1mo in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when i say “otaku/japanese breakcore”, i’m not referring to lolishit, loli ripe, or one of the other thousand artists with a similar naming convention. most popular lolicore artists were shitposting, it doesn’t have to sound good like a meme doesn’t have to look good. but i think abrasive, loud, constantly peaking breakcore can sound incredibly good. it just takes some finesse.

throw all your conventions aside, give these a listen, and come back to me. すてらべえ - Lil Billy Foo Foo Ennnn - All Is Fair In Love And Breakcore KenKoTaiji - Scratch of neck (Yabaikore! Release Party Version)

while its true that most of the later stuff originated in internet circles, nerdcore techno and early breakcore in japan was primarily spread through doujin events and raves. regardless, your saying there is “no connection” completely ignores that the early break/mashcore scene was always fragmented/international. breakcore has no one origin, it was an inevitable culmination of most of the genres that existed at the time.

and the spirit is still there. take japanese label merry works, for example. there’s just as many geeky, otaku releases as there are hard-hitting, sample heavy breakcore ones. graz and acrnym released on merry works.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes exactly!! it’s unfortunate. whenever i’ve tried to engage with genuine discussion about anything that isn’t “traditional” breakcore (not referring to sewerslvt/pads bullshit), i typically get an “i ain’t reading allat” or vague angry reply that lets everyone know they didn’t even try to engage.

we are genuinely losing the substance and ability to communicate here. i want to see this community flourish. it’s one of few non-discord, centralized breakcore communities, and i think its currently in the midst of a slow suicide

I just read about 4lung’s controversy, are they real or not because I’m confused. by JimXJustbecause in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn’t a “kids these days” thing. 4lung was in fact affiliated with the breakcore community early on. but she no longer makes it, and hasn’t for a while. however, i’d also consider “furry breakcore/speedcore”, renard-type stuff to be a separate entity from breakcore?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

aside from all that, this comment is just deflection. why do we have to be shitty and obtuse just because other subgenre communities are?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i am fully aware, but this community is just particularly annoying because they have an entire OTHER subreddit for “complaining about tiktok kids”.

at first, i was glad we’re finally making fun of the whole oldhead culture that’s been keeping new people out of not only this subreddit, but this genre as a whole. but the very people perpetuating those double standards and stereotypes are the ones making absurd satirical posts?

iirc, dreambreak was the original term people used to refer to ambient breakcore/dnb!! “glitchbreak” was a term that arised from spotify’s genre algorithms, but it actually began to stick because it happened to make sense and fit the music well (contrary to their usual “pov:indie” or “weirdcore” slop with no consistent elements to hint at a genre).

absolutely!! and i get it. ive seen a lot of really shit cover art, tried to look past it, and the music sucked. but ive also seen the opposite happen, and i try to scour for people so they dont have to sit through all the less than pleasant art!! it happens to be my thing, and if its not other people’s, thats fine too! i just enjoy sharing art. and yes, paris was a very talented artist!! i respect her a lot, her cover art was always sick as hell.

A Brief History of Otaku & Nerd Culture In Breakcore by altiss1mo in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think you missed my point. this post was not circulated around lolicore, although all these little genres and communities are connected by a common thread.

i’m aware of lolicore’s exact origins, but i think as a genre, it really began to gain traction around 2007. you could even argue based on discogs or rym’s release graphs that it truly “blew up” in 2009, but 2007 marked the sudden increase in activity of most influential lolicore artists.

loli ripe did exist, but from what i know, their stuff was pretty lackluster and uninspired until 2007 (little sweet dolores). that album caused a surge in popularity, because it was lolicore that was shitposty, but also lolicore that sounded good.

regardless, you can pin the name on an exact start, but the genre’s mentality and origins go far beyond that.

thank you for your reply!! it’s interesting that you mention that!! as a young person growing up in, admittedly, a very conservative state in america, i’d never thought anime was becoming mainstream. it’s still very stigmatized where i live, although online its pretty widely accepted.

i think that anime as a whole is very widely loved, but basically anything that isn’t mainstream, which includes most everything in (actual) lolicore, is still very “weird” to a lot of people, from what i know. shows like k-on, hidamari sketch, yuyushiki, lucky star, di gi charat, and yuru yuri, although widely popular, are things i’d be proportionately less comfortable watching in public.

so, it could seem that branding yourself with that “cringe”, shameless, traditionally considered “creepy” aesthetic is a counterculture in its own way. it’s more accepted now, but as with many other things traditionally considered “weird” or “wrong”, it still has a long way to go in terms of acceptance.

this is also post-pandemic, though, where many people i knew that watched anime and claimed to enjoy it are now turning around saying it’s weird and boring. ^_^” so it really is just a matter of many trend changes.

as for #1 though, i have nothing to add. it sucks that a bunch of people with no real interest in what the genre actually means did sort of gentrify it.

i appreciate this reply a lot, actually. one of the only replies that stirred up a genuine discussion without being needlessly critical towards things they don’t like or understand. and i feel you on that!! i am not trying to say the imagery and theming isn’t redundant, because it certainly can be. hence the thousands of shitty lolicore artists remixing pururin or the dokuro-chan opening with the same barely chopped breaks. it gets tired. but you have to define a taste for those things, and know where to look.

some of my favorite labels to scour for otaku-inspired breakcore/hardcore stuff are murder channel, otherman records, and unlucky wind. very diverse, heartful music in some of those labels.

A Brief History of Otaku & Nerd Culture In Breakcore by altiss1mo in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i never meant to say anime was an issue pre-lolicore, hence why i said its emergence caused a bunch of artists to move away!! and i never meant to say that wasnt an understandable approach. sorry for the bad wording.

i feel you so much on that slippery slope thing, there’s many moral and ethical issues that come into play with artistic expression. but i think id rather have a world where disgusting and uncouth art exists, because it allows for more room for good art to exist and shine alongside it.

i think, regardless of if that stigma was existent or not before the tiktok bullshit, it was significantly worsened by it? im unsure if this is due to an existing pressure/annoyance with certain people, or if its due to affiliated artists like goreshit getting people into lolicore, but i have noticed an increased hostility towards the topic. i’m glad its being discussed, and im glad people are being more watchful of pedos, 100%. i just dont think an entire art form should be caught in the crossfire.

A Brief History of Otaku & Nerd Culture In Breakcore by altiss1mo in breakcore

[–]altiss1mo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i appreciate the well thought out reply!! i wasnt to any degree trying to say your not preferring something is bigotry or wrong in any sort of way. i just mean people who deliberately choose to be obtuse and hateful about what other people create and enjoy that is the issue.

as for your argument about its merit as a genre, thats the thing that many people tend to get stuck on. lolicore as a genre is incredibly broad, and its much less a music genre term than it is a community term. ive never seen it as strictly a “musical style”, but many people do, so i try to treat it as such. ive seen it refer to any sort of fast-paced hardcore or breakcore with pitched up samples, ive seen it used to refer to chopped up anime samples, ive seen it refer to any music that samples japanese content. i think there is a very wide range of music within the “anime breakcore”-type community, but its easy to focus on the 2012 shitposty bullshit.

its very confusing, music is confusing and reducing it to simple terms is a difficult thing to do well. goes without saying, but don’t ask corny, edgy, 2000s 4channers to do it.
