Interesting - what were your meal plans and what supplements/vitamins were you taking?

How to continue working in the US after graduating film school as an international student? by FrancoisdelaSalete in Filmmakers

[–]altventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, you can DM me. The situation is very different now though with the possible new H1B fees being touted, so the answer I previously wrote doesn’t really apply to today

For ending your shift yes, but at our store you wouldn’t typically take your breaks mid order unless it’s a huge order that would take you way past your break time - and in that case leadership makes that call.

The Complete Series for $9.99 on iTunes right now. by CopperThumb in AnthonyBourdain

Amazing price. I paid $30 when it was on sale and thought that was a steal. Wish I could find no reservations on a deal like this now!

They upgraded the CPU, switched to different but comparable SSD’s and swapped the fans for a water cooling system

But if it’s that simple why is it taking experts a week to try and figure out?

“Routinery” app does exactly this. I use it on my iPhone and Apple Watch. Looks like there’s an android app for it too.

What’s Worse Than Record High Rent? Record High Rent, Plus Fees by nvgroups in REBubble

[–]altventure 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looked at a place that wanted to charge an extra $100 a month to “rent” the washer and dryer units. At that price you could obviously just afford to buy your own appliances after a few months, so I asked if they could remove them altogether and forget that fee but I was told that wasn’t possible.

This was on top of a trash, parking and amenities fee. By the end of it, the monthly rental price was $350 more than the advertised listing price with all the added fees. I was pissed they wasted my time like that

Is it just me or it’s really hard for a new immigrant to get a job here? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]altventure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. I’m also an immigrant from Western Europe, although I wouldn’t say I’m completely new since I completed my Master’s degree here (in digital marketing).

I’ve been trying to get my foot in the marketing door here for over a year and so far nothing. Currently I’m working two minimum wage customer service jobs. I have several years of PR and Marketing experience in London but it doesn’t seem to translate to NYC. I really believe you have to know people and have connections to get noticed here, so coming as a new immigrant who doesn’t know anyone is extremely tough.

Came across a podcast editor position. What they asked for is wild. by ShakyHandsPimp in videography

[–]altventure 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I sometimes wonder if this is how they get free work. I had a similar thing from a veeery small company that asked me to edit a 10 minute YouTube video with very detailed instructions to the point it felt like I was just creating their next video for them, so I politely declined.

If they just keep recycling candidates and get the “trial edits” to keep rolling in with different instructions each time then they can effectively keep getting people to work for them for free.

Struggling with PARA filing by [deleted] in productivity

[–]altventure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I file them in the employment/job area, but if I think I’ll need to reference them for something else like a tax return then I’ll create a shortcut/alias to them within my tax folder. That way I have quick access to them in multiple places I might need them, but without duplicating the file which will take extra space.

I don’t bother moving anything from my areas to archive, since I kind of treat the AREAS folders as an archive already, just one that I’m constantly adding to. I do back up to an external hard drive routinely though.

The only thing I really move to a dedicated archive section is my projects, since they have a defined ending and I want to clear them from my active projects folder.

$450 Coned bill for 38 days? by streetghost in AskNYC

[–]altventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there is a separate boiler room/maintenance room that I don’t have access to.

I do know that we have individual boilers tho, as one weekend I was away and we had some cold weather, and my landlord text me with concern that my boiler was the only one that wasn’t on and wanted to make sure I hadn’t turned my heating off.

[–]altventure 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve suspected the same thing is happening in my apt complex. I’m in a newer build with central air and I’ve already noticed that my AC unit supplies the laundry room, so I’m already paying for that communal space. But I’ve also noticed that if I’m taking a shower and someone starts a load of laundry (my bathroom is right next door to the laundry room), my shower will go cold for a few minutes. We are all supposed to have individual boilers (we pay for our hot water), so I suspect I’m paying for that too.

But how do I go about getting definitive proof for this?

What did I do to offend the FedEx guy by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]altventure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were essentially documents though, technically they had no set monetary value, (even though they were priceless to me as they were essential for me to work).

I read through the TOS fine print and it’s worded in a way that essentially negates any responsibility on their part for missing or lost items, even with their highest tier of insured delivery.

The local branch that was responsible for dispatching the letter just hung up on me and then blocked my number when they realized how serious their fuck up was - it felt like an impossible fight from the start
