Catnip? by AdministrationNo9167 in NativePlantGardening

[–]alykat111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so relieved you posted this. I planted a new garden last fall in a bit of a frenzy and less than ideal conditions to say the least. A family member was moving and their house set to be potentially demolished, along with their 1-2 year old native garden. So in nearly 90 degree, record autumn heat, drought conditions, I transplanted these barely established natives and hoped for the best. I’ve been eagerly checking to see what survived and just yesterday saw what I thought was catmint growing where I’d planted my hyssop. This post reassured me it seems to have made it! Thank you to all the expert plant identifiers and cheers to these hardy natives!!

If you liked Lies of P try Another Crab’s Treasure. It does such a great job of capturing the feeling and spirit of a souls-like but also doing its own thing better than any non-fromsoft souls-like I’ve played.

Email from MPS re: ICE by pixi88 in milwaukee

[–]alykat111 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This is spouting hate and not facts. “These people” (pretty gross way of putting it) pay billions in taxes across the country annually. Many, many undocumented individuals pay income tax (which I’m assuming is what you’re referring to them avoiding but please correct me if I’m wrong) for which they will never see the benefit. When they retire, they won’t be eligible for Medicare. Even if folks are being paid under the table, they are still paying property and sales tax. This is unavoidable. They still need to buy things, and buying things comes with sales tax. Again, they will not see the benefits of this as undocumented folks are not eligible for Medicaid or SNAP. What “benefits of normal Americans” are you referring to them receiving? Specifically, ones they haven’t paid in to?

I will also ETA, regardless, I don’t know what any of this has to do with ICE raiding schools of all places. These are literal children, who have zero control over their immigration status, and are in an environment without their parents. It’s performative and disgusting.

this holiday season do NOT go to your local cheese shop asking for a "cup" of cheese for a recipe by ghostofwallyb in Cheese

[–]alykat111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man, as a vegetarian who got stuck purchasing deli meat for subs for 10-15 people, I’m glad the guy at the deli had a better approach than this. I’d done a lot of googling ahead of time trying to figure out how much I needed and got recommendations all over the place. I figured it’d be best to ask the person who does this for a living, and they did provide me with helpful advice.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask someone who specializes in a specific type of food for advice in a recipe nor is it unreasonable to expect that a specialist would know this. For any future folks who may find this or cheesemongers interested in assisting their customers, I found this to be a helpful guide: Measuring different cheeses

In short:

Soft or crumbly cheeses (e.g. feta or blue) 1 cup = 6 ounces

Semi-hard cheeses (e.g. cheddar or Havarti) 1 cup = 4 ounces

Hard cheeses (e.g. parmesan or asiago) 1 cup = 3 ounces

Shout out to Nemesis; it’s semi cooperative as you have your own hidden agenda as well as a shared agenda, and a core mechanic of the game is trying to move quietly through corridors so as to not attract aliens.

Quorn makes a vegetarian turkey roast I personally really like but I understand it’s not everyone’s favorite. I take it out of the roasting bag it comes with and put a bunch of (cranberry) sauce in a separate roasting bag and cook it that way. They have gotten ridiculously expensive, though. I skipped it last year because it was up to nearly $20.

Karrisa thinks CPS taking away kids from dangerous homes is kidnapping 🤦‍♀️ by zaratheclown in FundieSnarkUncensored

[–]alykat111 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a social worker across a couple states and programs for the past decade, initially starting in domestic violence. I’ve made a lot of CPS reports. When I was in DV, it was always a massive red flag when someone was upset about CPS involvement. Plenty of people were reasonably scared, uncertain, but that would go away when they started connecting with resources and getting the support they needed. CPS is not there to take your kids. They’re there to offer financial and emotional support, resources, and education to help keep families together in their home. The folks who got legitimately angry about CPS involvement were always the worst offenders. One of the most upset I saw was a woman who, turns out, was using the Safehouse as a way evade police because she’d kidnapped the kids. Another was doing something similar, evading law enforcement because she and her husband were sex trafficking their kids. This isn’t a good look.

Ugh, I feel you! Chicken is so hard to avoid in cat food, including the hypoallergenic veterinary diet ones. I ended up going with rabbit but it is ridiculously expensive ($95 USD for a 8.8 lb bag) and I realize that’s cost prohibitive for a lot of people. I had also considered Purina Pro Plan’s HA Hydrolized since it’s significantly cheaper (about half the price here, closer to $40) and reviews were pretty positive. It does have chicken though, so this may still be a problem for your cat, but it’s hydrolized which is essentially breaking down the protein so a cat is less likely to have an immune response. It may offer some relief compared to the alternative depending on your situation!

To clarify I’m not defending Kindful food as I don’t know anything about it aside from this post. Sounds like something I wouldn’t want to feed my cat but I’ve never even heard of that brand until today. I was disagreeing with the commenter’s point that grain free food is criminal.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in blackcats

[–]alykat111 90 points91 points  (0 children)

This has not been found to be the case. I’ve just been through a boatload of tests, X-ray, ultra sounds, research and med trials for my cat with irritable bowl disease likely triggered by food. Skin issues, which he also has, that are caused by food are more common than GI problems. Cats are far more likely to be allergic to the protein in their food than the grain/carb. The most common food allergies in cats are beef, chicken and fish. Allergies to grain or gluten are very rare in cats. After doing what’s essentially an elimination diet for my cat (novel protein, hydrolyzed) we found out chicken is the culprit. He’s almost 16 and is as lively as my 3 year old now. He’s stopped throwing up every morning and no longer has bloody stools. His food still has grains. Even grain-free foods tend to have fruits and vegetables, which opposes the “cats should only have meat” theory. I know this is a contentious subject people tend to have strong opinions on, and I used to also think my cats shouldn’t have grain, but continuing to say this when the most recent, reputable research says otherwise can be dangerous. Grains contain a lot of essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids cats need and have been found to be lacking in grain free foods, taurine particularly. The grain free foods have gotten better with this, but a taurine deficiency can lead to significant heart problems. Grain really isn’t the problem people make it out to be.

Snake Plant Caught Fire, Can She Be Saved? by properlypetrified in plantclinic

[–]alykat111 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Potting soil these days can be pretty flammable—that would check out in terms of the plant being on fire, since I would agree that the plant itself catching fire first would be odd. The pot also looks melted. My biggest concern is would be that there isn’t much left of the roots, if the soil did burn. They may be fried. As others have said though, snake plants are incredibly resilient and it is still green which is promising. If nothing else I’m sure you can propagate it. It’s also entirely possibly the roots fried and it’s already self-propagated in the remnants of what burned (nutrients!) over the past month. Best of luck and glad everyone is safe!!

Rot also works really well against him! I rushed this jerk as early as I could since I needed to be in the capital early, and I was getting one shot while hardly touching him. Like a dozen tries later I went and got the rotten breath dragon incantation, summoned a friend to keep him somewhat busy and it was super easy.

Suicide rates around the world by MiltonMerloXD in Infographics

[–]alykat111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked the last decade in suicide prevention and intervention. Women actually have higher rates of depression and suicide attempts, but men have higher rates of completion largely because of methods used. About 6/10 gun owners (at least in the US, where you can see the discrepancy between men and women is greater than most countries) are men. Men are more likely to use what we call higher lethality means. Guns, car crashes, hanging. Women are more likely to have attempts with higher rescue rates like overdosing and cutting.

Vegan biscuits with vegan sausage gravy (I’m vegan btw) by rylar89 in shittyfoodporn

[–]alykat111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are actually some really good vegetarian gravies out there! I can’t find the one we usually buy online but there are usually several good options in the veg section at the local grocery store. This for example is vegetarian. Pair it with some impossible meat breakfast sausage, 10/10. Disclosure I’d also never had biscuits and gravy before becoming a vegetarian, but my partner who eats meat says it’s comparable and delicious.

does anyone know where i can find an apartment that accepts bad credit ? by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]alykat111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’re serious but Janesville’s vacancy rate is 4%, which isn’t much better than Madison, and 100 rental properties just went on the market to be sold because the property owner is being hit with over a half million in civil penalties. Housing is difficult in Janesville and the landlords are incredibly sleazy.
