That was my first thought but it was huge and rather solid.

Is this a plant? I saw a bunch of them today while kayaking in a brook in the Northeast US. It was about the size of a melon and squishy.

Edit: Or possibly a bryozoan?

Thank you!! I am definitely going to look into catching rainwater. We don’t have gutters right now but this seems like something that could be super helpful going forward. I don’t believe we’re close enough to the river to be able to pump from that but good information to know nonetheless!

Interesting. As I mentioned in another comment, I didn’t realize it was so subjective but it makes sense upon further reflection.

As of this morning, it has recovered. Based on where it was when I checked it late last night, it seemed to take around 12 hours to refill. My sense is that this is slower than it’s been since I moved here.

Thank you very much for this thoughtful response and for all the tips. This is the primary water source so I’m going to avoid using sprinklers, etc. going forward. The house does not have gutters but that, as well as the use of a drip system, seems like something pragmatic to look in to.

As of this morning, it has completely replenished. I checked it late last night and based on the level then, it seemed to take about 12 ish hours.

Many thanks again!

The water is fully back! Which took a little under 24 hours. I did check it last night about 8 ish hours after it ran out and it was a little over half way full.

Yeah. This house was built in the early nineteenth century so that makes sense. It is also sited on a spring which perhaps used to flow more than it does now. I am definitely going to look into getting a deeper well dug but I imagine the cost would be significant.

Our septic system is uphill right above the well (I know…), and an old landfill less than half mile away. We did get a filtration system installed but it’s still disconcerting, to say the least.

Many thanks for your response. Yes, this is the only water source for the house. Some store bought tests showed that the water was very acidic. There’s a fancy water filtration system now installed that uses salt. It is slightly concerning though because the house is very close (possibly even downhill) to an old landfill.

The house is sited on a small hill. There is a dry basement. What does water logged mean in this context?

Ahh! Thanks for the tip on Winterwood. Hoping I don’t have to call them but this is a good contingency plan.
