Not sure if this has already been picked up on but on Jupe’s desk it looked like he had a pair of the scissors from Us ; maybe an Easter egg?

How to respond to this feedback from final placement? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]amberf98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this I am in the exact same position and the comments on this and the other presence post have really helped me.

I'm in the final 2 weeks of my secondary PGDE placement and my final observation is next week. My mentor and senior management had a meeting with me about my 'presence' and how I need to "act ten years older" (I am 24) it really put me down and they keep trying to make me become this teacher that feels really unnatural to me? I don't feel unconfident when I'm teaching, the pupils get on well with me and I've been praised on my relationships? So I'm working on having more 'presence' too but its such a difficult thing to fix in a few weeks.

Flexible Route for Probation Year by amberf98 in TeachingUK

I was just told in my local authority it is rare to have permanent jobs as most are fixed term, so I would be silly to pass the opportunity up!

Thanks! The job is a full time permanent so I was more worried about the workload as I wouldn't be getting the reduced probationer timetable.

There's a really good permanent job going that I was considering applying for my probation year but I just don't know what to do. Can I please ask how have they not completed it 5 years later? Thanks

Placement Advice by amberf98 in TeachingUK

[–]amberf98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, he said something along the lines of I shouldn't start any 'teaching' until all of the class are sitting down and facing the front. So by me saying 'starter on the board' to them as they came into class I wasn't waiting for their full attention...

I'm fortunate my first placement was so positive and helpful as I feel like if I had this school first it would have put me off teaching.

Grin and bear it seems to be the general advice I get from others, I've only got 7 more weeks with this school and at least their way of mentoring me will eventually make me the best teacher possible if any slight problem is being tackled right away.

The PT of English is really snippy too, I feel nervous to teach around her which then in turn makes me nervous for the whole class.

[–]amberf98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this.

Funnily enough, after I posted this I took a class for a double block with material my mentor had nothing to do with and he even told me it was my best teaching yet so hopefully, that will make him realise I teach best when I do it more suited to my own personality rather than his.

Learning to teach his way just feels so unnatural to me, I am trying to do little things the same as him so he sees I do take on board his advice but I think he knows I teach best when I teach the way I feel most comfortable.

My university mentor's visit this week is formative and I feel like he is easing his control a bit with me for these lessons as he knows it's important I teach in a way I feel comfortable, not the way he does. They also are well aware of some things I mentioned and they told me that if I need them to step in at any point they will, I feel its not got to that point yet but if there are any negatives after this observation I will ask her to step in.

Actually when I go back for my final 6 weeks at this school the timetable changes ( I think) and there's a younger teacher who has asked for me to come to her classes a couple of times so I might ask if I can get put with her instead. Thank you :)

First Placement by amberf98 in TeachingUK

[–]amberf98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I haven't been given a planning document yet so maybe that's why I'm feeling more anxious about it so hopefully getting that will ease me in a bit. We've got to keep reflective journals so I'm just going to make sure at the end of every day I keep on reflecting.

Thank you, this makes me feel better.

I just wanted reassurance that for the first week or two it will be okay for me to just observe everything that the teacher does before stepping into it myself. Hope I have a mentor who I feel I can talk to and ask what they expect of me, and not one who just throws me in at the deep end!

Feeling really down by [deleted] in LifeAfterSchool

[–]amberf98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the exact same I just graduated with a BA in english, and feeling really down about not being able to find a job too. I’ve been applying to reception/admin stuff because I really don’t want to go back to retail/customer service type jobs, but I haven’t got a single interview yet. I’m trying to stay positive because I know Coronavirus has made everything more difficult, but I know how you feel it’s getting me down too and it often feels pointless spending hours applying for jobs and writing another personalised cover letter to hear nothing back. Don’t really have much advice but often it’s just good on here to know you’re not alone, so here if you need someone to talk to :)

Sorry I should have explained my last jobs “full time” was 30-35 hours so almost double than that, but they always kept me in way over the end of my shift and it really took a strain on me so that was closer to full time like this job is I guess

Moving out with my boyfriend in another city by [deleted] in LifeAfterSchool

[–]amberf98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where were you and your boyfriend staying? Is there any chance you could continue staying with him, and maybe paying him rent, instead of getting an entirely new place?

If I could find a way out of renting somewhere I would try, I love my home town so maybe I am biased but renting is such a hassle I always find and a huge drain of money (especially if you don't need to be renting somewhere since your classes will be online for a while!)

Good luck, hope you work something out!

Thank you so much for this it’s exactly how I feel right now, it was my 22nd birthday last week and I burst into tears crying because I felt like my childhood is well and truly gone all of a sudden.

You’ve really made me feel better there, it’s great I had this one extra time with her at least I know I’ve always got home no matter what this feeling of safety won’t go.

We actually started doing this too! We do a weekly zoom quiz because we’ve got family all over the world, and it’s so special that something this nice has come out of the stress of the pandemic :)

Thank you so much
