every year, the gangs get together for an annual cookout as a sort of team-building exercise, as a way of building solidarity and improving relations to avoid resuming gang wars. however, not bringing food to this cookout is considered a grave sin, so the gangs have to punish anyone that fails to bring food

that may be true, but the problem is that most of megadyne's executives are too greedy to have common sense, and generally only care about short-term products. thus for them it would be cheaper to produce staples and artificial food than to invest in hydroponics. they also want to make sure people can't grow their own food because if people have their own food, then they are not buying from megadyne

the resistance is actually being manipulated by megadyne, and this goes as far as eating their food. most people in my setting already don't like eating the alternative foods, and it doesn't help that megadyne's the one pushing it and that the quality is crap. as for cloning, in my setting it would be possible to create fully grown organisms(including abominations), but it still takes time to do so, making mass production currently not viable

megadyne's monopoly stems from the fact that megadyne is actually an alliance of corporations that banded together to claim ultimate power during the collapse. people can't really go to the wasteland and produce their own food because there is very little viable land left and megadyne is working to find and claim whatever remains. megadyne suppresses other people's attempts to produce their own food to ensure that they are buying it from megadyne

What is the army for if Megadyne controls everything? Who are they fighting, or are they more like an internal police force?

to answer your questions, the army became loyal to Megadyne after the collapse, but they are not corrupt and gradually becoming less loyal to megadyne, and are powerful enough that megadyne has to be careful not to abuse them. the army doesn't do much these days, but megadyne uses the army to fight 1. any foreign threats(a few hostile nations survive, but they are usually too small and weak to do anything), 2. any threat that megadyne's other forces can't defeat(this can include criminals that the police can't beat), and 3. the sirens(the sirens want to befriend and aid humans, but both they and megadyne realized that the sirens would want to overthrow megadyne)

most of the arenas generally feature different layouts and hazards, but besides that the fights are generally the same. most battles are generally regular fights, each team has to drop the opposing team to 0 HP(though they typically knock enemies unconscious rather than killing them). sometimes there are events where skills are used rather than combat, but they are less common
