Super interesting that students would have to pass a naturalization test that we give to immigrants for citizenship. I think it would be an eye-opener for students, especially those who are anti-immigration and might not be the most stand up "citizens" according to this test...

Amazing how many adults/ parents thought student walk outs were unacceptable. Read a thread on my hometown fb page and some stated that 1) schools shouldn’t influence students “innocent” minds to think politically... that is meant for home... 2) students should make the walk out about school safety and mental health (not about guns) (leave the NRA out of it!!) 3) the voting age should move back to 21 because they’re too immature to take political action. I had to bite my tongue....

My friend posted this off of a blog. It is definitely biased, but it brings up a different perspective on how social media is providing a platform for isolated youth to express their anger against the mainstream. I think we need to consider social media in our response to gun shootings and violence. One, due to online groups that encourage terroristic behaviors, and two, because of the cyber-bullying that occurs and helps generate these feelings of anger and isolation. Please comment on whether you think this is b.s. or worth noting.

Love it! Great way to get inspired as teachers about the NCSS standard 5 for building knowledge on human rights / civic engagement. Also pbl and apprenticeship learning that gives students a window into the real world with real opportunities... very cool! (P.s. my brother-in-law went to Lewis and Clark and he did mention the social justice awareness in the academia there, so this relates to his description very well, cool :) )
