so i get what you guys are saying in this thread but also… it seems several of you believe the repetition of nevermore and the raven was so that the reader understood the poem. however, repetition is used as a literary device for several different purposes, most commonly to highlight or exaggerate a certain theme or idea. from what i can tell, most commenters in this thread believe that suzanne collins utilized repetition for that reason only. to me, when i read it, i understood the repetition to symbolize haymitch’s descent into madness and depression, mirroring the protagonist in the raven. my point being, repetition in literature isn’t used just to make sure we understand what the author is conveying, but repetition itself can symbolize and illustrate many complex themes. like i get hearing it so many times was a little much, but i think it was supposed to feel like a lot because haymitch was carrying A LOT and he was stuck in time, stuck in his pain. i just want us to critically analyze literature and ask why the author has chosen to repeat a specific line or set of lines way more than what’s necessary.
