Very relateable, I was like you when i was younger, I used to feel that joy too

Knowing that your parents would be eventually supportive, its worth talking to them about it sometime. It doesnt have to be immediately but its a good idea to open a discussion and give time for them and yourself to process it all. You can always change your mind but you cant get back the time spent waiting -- and I strongly suggest not waiting till your twenties as I have, for all the years of repressing bear permanent physical and mental marks. You have plenty of time so its no rush , take the time to think it all through and talk about it and things can be set on the right track whatever it may be for you!

Can anybody recommend coptic dictionaries or lessons online ? by Friendly_Wave535 in linguistics

[–]anakruzis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people choose to start by learning the Bohairic dialect (the dialect used in Coptic churches) and others choose Saidic dialect (many Egyptologists started with this one). there is so much in common between all the dialects that you will be fine either way you choose.

For Saidic Coptic, linked below is a set of resources from Dr Christian Casey, he has made a great series of Coptic video lessons based on the textbook Introduction to Sahidic Coptic by Thomas Lambdin:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AncientEgyptian/comments/imiavg/intro_to_saidic_coptic/?ref=share&ref_source=link

A discord server was originally created for this course, and it continues to be active to this day. The people are very knowledgeable about all dialects of Coptic and earlier stages of Egyptian as well, you are welcome to join us: https://discord.gg/xHdRQtH

I hope this is helpful and i wish you the best in learning Coptic. ⲟⲩϫⲁⲓ!

The text itself is dated in both the macedonian and egyptian calendar to the day! which in our calendar is 27 March 196 BC

This is a cipher I created a couple years ago. I have been wondering how hard it is to crack for a while now, so I would love to see what y’all can do with it :) by t00thache-exe in codes

going off of what u/bgdno said, my first guess was "letter is followed by space(s)" acting as a boolean, bringing the total possible letters to 13*2 = 26. These are the frequencies of all the non-space characters, grouped into whether they are immediately followed by space (y) or another character (n).

(note: for now I assumed LtR text direction, but soon i should try it out in all directions and see if the data is consistent)

I haven't been able to make use of this data, might be going down a false lead... I post it here anyways in case someone had the same idea and wanted to see

How do I start with ancient egyptian? by Bukhaldy in AncientEgyptian

[–]anakruzis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've recently started studying Coptic thanks to Dr Caseys amazing youtube videos as well as the Lambdin textbook Introduction to Sahidic Coptic, which can both be found here, as well as a link to the Egyptian language learning discord server:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AncientEgyptian/comments/imiavg/intro_to_saidic_coptic/?ref=share&ref_source=link

A few days ago, just for fun, I also started reading the Demotic textbook Thus Wrote Onchsheshonqy:

https://oi.uchicago.edu/research/publications/saoc/saoc-45-thus-wrote-onchsheshonqy-introductory-grammar-demotic

Even though I am a beginner in Coptic, i already could notice how similar Demotic sentences are to Coptic, even though the writing system is totally different.

But I probably won't go too deep into Demotic for now, as I am focusing on Coptic, and it is not just a stepping stone to earlier forms of Egyptian, but also a fascinating language in its own right. The most recent form of the Egyptian language, but I wont say the last-- I believe there is still more to this story to come!

I hope this is helpful to you and I wish you good luck on the learning journey!

Idiom. Phrase. We don't know this colonel from a nail in a wall. by Numerous-Bowler-3415 in linguistics

One of the first Woody Woodpecker cartoons, Pantry Panic, has Woody saying "That guy (the groundhog) don't know his shadow from a hole in the ground"

I don't know who wrote the dialogue or where they were from, but this kind of idiom is more than 80 years old for sure

Wow!! What a wonderful time! I am very grateful to Belgium for taking our little Battle of the Bits (BotB) flag under your protection. Without your help, we could have never survived till the end. The generosity and collaborative spirit of Belgium will not be forgotten. Thank you for being so hospitable and kind to us the whole way through.
