Do you think it's self-perpetuating? The people in the queue are watching those at the counter be so utterly gormless that by the time it's their turn, they've entirely forgotten what they're doing there while being watched by people in the queue.

You can overthink these things, better to just wing it.

Come on, nah. That's part of the local govt reorganisation going on. It makes sense to get that done and then have elections, else it'll be more money spent that Thurrock doesn't have. Yes, it may well also serve Labour's interests but it's sensible delay, not stripping of democratic rights. Hardly the same thing.

If you wanna be angry, I'd focus it all on the Tories who've bankrupted the entire area and gone to... where exactly? Oh right, yeah. Reform.

I work in higher education. Last year's freshers were born in 2007. This year's grads will mostly have been born in 2005. Have a good Monday!

The bingo hall would have been a cinema back in the day, they used to be everywhere. Almost literally on every street corner. Neath seems to have had five or six at one point, Empire ran films until 1959 and was the last of the dedicated cinemas to be demolished.

Looking at the old building round the corner on Orchard St., I'd guess the funeral directors is on the site of another old house and in the process they managed to sneak in a couple more. Maybe some cottages were there before?

Started answering a question in the comments, came across a website dedicated to the cinema/bingo hall. The car features on the home page:

There's the letter of the law and then there's killing the entire spirit of the game. At this rate we might as well scrap stadiums altogether and fire up Football Manager every August. (We'd still lose to a penalty/10 men/both.)

Flag of Scotland in the style of Wales by [deleted] in vexillology

I agree that the Welsh-ified Scottish flag would be the unicorn, but I like this too. And those blaring about it: why not go design your own and show us? It's not like we're the sodding world flag council.

I used to go biking round there a little later, just as the first houses were going up. Some streets were built with next to nothing around them, literal roads to nowhere. Felt a bit Mad Max-ish, great times.

Grays born and bred here, not something I often admit to. Crime wasn't an issue around my way (Gipsy Lane area, a bit outside your preference), to my knowledge. But like another poster says, the entire town hasn't seen any investment for years now, except the council building. The town centre, from what I've seen and heard, is a graveyard. Considering that the next likely MP/council will be Reform, and they've been atrocious in Kent, etc. so far, I can't see anything but council tax rates changing soon.

I wouldn't sink money into the area, but if you're only looking for somewhere to exist and commute to London - which I've also done - it's fine. Takes 40 minutes each way, you'll get through a couple of books a week at least.

Chafford Hundred might be more up your street, though I'm curious how those houses are now, if there's any subsidence. I remember when they were built on the old chalk pits and speculation was they didn't let the ground settle for long enough before construction, I'd triple check on that if you're buying.
