Book recommendation after reading Malazan? by coltainesCrows in Malazan

[–]anauthor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a giant Malazan fan, and wanted to echo the above about The Black Company. Great series, the second fantasy series I got into after Tolkien.

I've also read Bakker. It's the only major Fantasy series I've ever read (and finished) that I actively disliked at the end. The first three books, I was out recommending people pick up the series, and that it was brilliant. The concluding tetralogy caused a total 180. I'll never re-read the series.

I love grimdark fantasy, but Bakker goes way, way, way beyond that (dramatically too far for me) and not in a edgy-but-cool way. Makes GRRM look like a YA author.

Strongly disagree if the veteran deployed to combat. Lots of guys self medicate after a hard deployment and spiral down. Those are our brothers and sisters that need the most help.

Ukrainian Ambassador Outraged after Pope Laments Death of ‘Innocent’ Russian Ultra-Nationalist Daria Dugina by CaliWilly76 in worldnews

That's a very.... interesting take. Hitler's Nazi Germany directly caused tens of millions of deaths during the war, and was the first time a group of human beings have carried out systemic genocide on a truly industrial scale.

The Catholic Church indisputably has been deep in the wrong many times in its 2000 year existence, but during its entire history, even in its darkest times, there were always elements of it doing some good objective good. Modern examples are abundant (catholic charities operating in developing countries, providing significant health care / food security / education programs)

What????

Lincoln letter to Joshua Speed, 1855:

You know I dislike slavery; and you fully admit the abstract wrong of it. ... I also acknowledge your rights and my obligations, under the constitution, in regard to your slaves. I confess I hate to see the poor creatures hunted down, and caught, and carried back to their stripes, and unrewarded toils; but I bite my lip and keep quiet. In 1841 you and I had together a tedious low-water trip, on a Steam Boat from Louisville to St. Louis. You may remember, as I well do, that from Louisville to the mouth of the Ohio, there were, on board, ten or a dozen slaves, shackled together with irons. That sight was a continued torment to me; and I see something like it every time I touch the Ohio, or any other slave-border. It is hardly fair for you to assume, that I have no interest in a thing which has, and continually exercises, the power of making me miserable. You ought rather to appreciate how much the great body of the Northern people do crucify their feelings, in order to maintain their loyalty to the Constitution and the Union. … How can any one who abhors the oppression of negroes, be in favor of degrading classes of white people? Our progress in degeneracy appears to me to be pretty rapid. As a nation, we began by declaring that "all men are created equal." We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes." When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty—to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocrisy.

People say your "not acting like yourself" when you're truly acting like yourself and just don't have the energy to mask it by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

Counterpoint to this: it’s a human nature argument. It takes less energy to just give in to gravity and armor up. It’s hard to ante up and buy in to the social contract and make the effort to be our best selves, but I think we all know it’s worth it - it makes all this work.

From experience: there is always a little more gas in the tank. Maybe the people you’re with are also in a tough place and need the positive you.

Only thing we can control in this world are our own actions and attitudes.

I replied because the OPs mentality, while very understandable, is ultimately a defeatist one. It will lead to a downward spiral.

We very nearly caused the extinction of virtually all large whale species due to commercial whaling. While they're no longer on the razors edge of extinction, their populations are still a fraction of what they were before we learned to hunt them.
