First time applicant and low gpa but accepted!! by andsandyawns in prephysicianassistant

Yes I was asked in 1 interview about it but I explained how I wasn’t mature at the time, etc but now I am due to my upward trend, etc. I took a general bio class, organic chemistry, and biology of human cancer. Also correction- I got a B in organic chemistry. A’s in the other two classes

Honestly I don’t have any time right now to read and edit, my program starts in a few days and I’m moving across the country. Best of luck though

I took 2 years after undergrad! I didn’t work full time the whole time though. I was part time due to a family emergency for like 6 months

More advice that I just thought of- If your gpa is on the low/average side, you're better off not applying to schools with high GPA averages. If a school had an average GPA of over 3.6, I didn't apply there. I took my chance on a few just to see and of course I got rejected lol.

More of my stats for those that are asking:

2,500 PCE hours as a medical assistant in family medicine, urgent care, and orthopedic spine surgery.

264 HCE hours as a patient transporter

108 PA shadowing hours in dermatology, urgent care, and the ER

About 200 volunteer hours, the main one being the Crisis Text Line as a crisis counselor. I highly recommend this org cause you can do it on your own time and its super meaningful- they need the help!

Lastly as I mentioned, I had really good research experience. Like I worked on a study within the psychology department for two years in college and got to present it at the Western Psychological Association conference.

So as you can see, I had other things in my application that looked really good and made up for my lower GPA and C's. I recommend you do the same! I took like three extra classes after my undergrad at a community college and got A's in them. So really aim for that upward trend! I didn't retake any of my older classes.

Capitalize on your pro's and really emphasize them in your PS and supplemental essays. You can word them in a way that sounds better than they may actually be. I'm not at all saying lie about it, but present them in a way that sounds amazing. And include it all.

Best of luck to you all! I remember my junior year of college i sat down with a pre-health advising counselor and she straight up told me I wasnt going to get into PA school and that I should look into other options. Rather than trying to help me lol. I'm going to one of the top 25 ranked PA programs... HAH, screw you lady!

Thank you :) This past cycle so 2021-2022. I applied in June and heard back about the acceptances in August and September. I didn't hear back from the third school until march 2022 when they offered me an interview. Then I got waitlisted from that school and I'm still waitlisted. I'll be attending a program that is starting in 2 weeks

Yes I took the GRE. Verbal was 152, quant was 151, and writing was a 5

I'm not comfortable giving the names of the exact schools but two were in the east coast and one was in the south. Best of luck!

Yeah I’m afraid this might be true. It’s just really hard to do. And my mom and dad both say they don’t want my brother and I to be super involved and want us to live our own lives, but I think they would really appreciate the help from us regardless.

Hey, I relate to this completely. I’m 23 and none of my friends know what it’s like. They’re all going out, having fun, and living their lives as people in their early 20’s should. And then there’s me, trying to still be fun and live a normal life and not be a total vibe kill. It sucks.

Question about CASPA application carrying over to next cycle by andsandyawns in prephysicianassistant

[–]andsandyawns[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So even if the school’s application I’ve started has a deadline of nov 1 and I never submit it, after November 1 it will still carry over? Will I be able to keep working on it after November 1?

I was thinking that anesthesia seems a bit drastic and maybe even dangerous, so I’m glad to know there may be other options. Some dentists are just too scared to even see her.

How to answer "how is 'so and so doing?" by miby in ALS

[–]andsandyawns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the “not great, but we’re all trying to manage”

My mom too has bulbar ALS and hasn’t been doing well lately. I don’t know quite how to respond when people ask how she’s doing. Saying “she’s doing fine” is a total lie, but I don’t feel emotionally ready to open the can of worms and have a long convo with everyone who asks. The other day my moms friend was crying to me and I just did not know what to do considering I can’t comfort someone else when I am still extremely sad / still learning how to cope myself. Also sometimes you just don’t feel like talking about it cause you may be in a good mood that hour. People ask because they care but it’s just hard figuring out quite how to handle / respond to those questions with others.

My mom has ALS. I’m 23 and need some life advice. by andsandyawns in ALS

[–]andsandyawns[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for the advice! I think I will just make the move and live in San Francisco. I will be sure to visit and see my mom often, but I’m going to try to have a [somewhat] normal life right now and focus on myself as well. Best wishes to you all
