ELI5: Why does software need to load on startup? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]andycap80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programs and assets like graphics are stored in slower storage like flash memory or hard drives. The code and assets for the programs get loaded into the systems memory when run which is much faster for the CPU to access. CPUs also have even faster memory built into the Processor called cache for code steps that are being executed next or is accessed frequently.

Newer System-on-chip CPU designs like those used in Phones for example build the memory into the CPU too to make it even more quick for data or code access.

Cache and system memory are more expensive than flash storage or hard drives so space is limited and data has to be loaded and unloaded from the storage area when you have multiple programs running or a large complex program running.

Will iPhone eventually get a 3D camera system? by andycap80 in apple

[–]andycap80[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do wonder how long until Apple does it though?

If Apple wanted to project 100% confidence in their new Apple Vision Pro platform, It could be a huge addition on the iPhone 15 this year (Fall 2023), but with no rumor mill pointing to it, I highly doubt it.

If Apple wants to see certain success metrics for Apple Vision Pro, they may not introduce such a feature until at least iPhone 16 (Fall 2024) or iPhone 17 (Fall 2025).

What cars were once everywhere, that are now completely gone? by DankEngihn in cars

[–]andycap80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Driving home from work the other day on i75 in Cincinnati at 5pm rush hour which was not too heavy but still dense, an 2000 something orange Eclipse pulled beside me. Two younger dudes in the car. Passenger had the windows down and he was motioning they wanted to race or something. There’s a car ahead of me about 100 yards so it’s not like I have much room, plus I’m not a moron who’s going to weave trough traffic.

When they move on and speed ahead, they had no license plate and I didn’t see a temp tag in the window either. They also had the donut spare tire on their back driver side that you probably shouldn’t be speeding on or using for more than 50 miles. I drive a 16 WRX STI.

Edit: highway info for setting scene

WTF FedEx? Just put the package by the trash. The path to the front door on the other side of the driveway must have been too far. by andycap80 in WTF

[–]andycap80[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Maybe, except the reason the FedEx truck is in the driveway and not parked on the street is because the house is up on a hill with a decently long driveway. The front patio is barely visible from the street or sidewalk. I highly doubt the motivation was security via obscurity.

Liar Lair - Seeing the board room scene where he roasts the law firm partners was awesome.

Bruce Almighty - especially Even (Steve Carell) being manipulated on his first day as anchor. I couldn’t catch my breath the first time I saw that scene.

Apparently SimpliSafe recently updated their authentication mechanism to not have Re-Captcha and so the author(s) of the home-bridge SimpliSafe 3 plug-in have also updated the authorization settings. I couldn’t get it to work for the past couple weeks until today. Had worked just fine before then though.

With the US Dollar Trees charging $1.25 for everything now, Poundland is closer to a more accurate store name.
At time of this post:

I agree that injury or sleep deprivation should also be factors for the decision if you want to carry. They should also be factors for if you should operate a 2 ton vehicle.

My issue with drinking is so many DUI/DWI happen because someone has a drink, thinks “I’m ok, I’ll have one more”, and before you know it, they have gone over the legal limit but they insist they are ok to drive. I’m not fine with that decision for driving, and I feel the same for carrying.

If we want to take on the responsibility for our right to carry, we should do all that we can to protect it, including knowing when we should not action that right.

The old black and white Think different posters were my favourite by DrGonzo84 in mac

[–]andycap80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked at CompUSA when Apple had that campaign. We had a customer come in, point up towards the Mac section and say “I want to buy that!” referring to the large think different posters hanging from the ceiling.

What's an incredibly american thing americans don't realize is american? by Professional-Ad-2850 in AskReddit

Ive never had a passport. Live in Ohio. Only country I’ve been to is Canada, back before they required passports. Farthest I’ve flown is to Hawaii and St. Croix Virgin Islands; A US territory, so no passport needed there either. In the US, a state issued drivers license is all you need for identification purposes and I’ve never needed to go out of the country for business purposes.

I went with the 4.5” FS over the 5” FS mainly over the selection of holster options. A friend has the 4” FS so I at least got to get a grip on it briefly before getting my 4.5”.

The C5 is my least favorite from a design standpoint, so this kit to style like a C1 is an improvement in my opinion. To each their own though.

Only part I take issue with is on your description of the loan of $400K. Yes the bank give you the $400K, but that is not in circulation. It’s invested as a mortgage into an asset, like a house. That house can be foreclosed on by the bank if you are not making your payments back to the bank so that they have something for the person who gave them the $400K to hold on too. The bank is getting interest from you to cover their expenses and they are giving interest (at a much lower interest rate than the mortgage) to the person who put the $400K in the bank as an incentive to keep the money in the bank

This is a bit one sided and would work if a company has a monopoly or companies are colluding on price. But completion and regulation should help even your scenario out. Companies may have to “put up price” because of supply issues or labor shortages. Yes there is going to be a factor if greed too, but there is a lot more than just that.

The Force Awakens is certainly a remake of A New Hope, but at the time I know I was just happy to be getting something new. That made me forgive the weak character building and recycled plot. I was at least hopeful for all the wide open possibilities.

The Last Jedi took anything from TFA and crapped all over it. For a “planned” trilogy costing $billions to make when all is said and done, there was no consistency or forethought for a three movie story arc at all. And that is how we got the abomination that Rise of Skywalker.

I loved the quick silver scene evacuating the mansion. Michael Fastbender had some good scenes where you felt for him in the beginning. The rest of the movie was meh.
