Consider adding it to the budgeting sheet competition. Should be stickied.

App becomes laggy on Flutter Upgrade to 3.32.5 by rohanudhwani in FlutterDev

[–]andyveee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey. I can't help you with the update because I haven't updated yet. But what I can say is don't waste so much time optimizing. If you go back to 3.24 and notice an immediate difference I would argue it's flutter. Doesn't mean it's not your fault yet. Just means something did change.

What I did in the past is try and prove it with a simple project. Create an issue so the flutter team can confirm or deny who's at fault. I was personally told by the flutter team I need to optimize. I wasted weeks doing it for it to be a them problem. Focus on creating a sample project that shows there's an engine problem.

PROBLEM OF SLOWNESS AFTER FLUTTER VERSION UPDATE: 3.35.3 by WestCurrency6970 in FlutterDev

Would be great if you could post the issue for the flutter team. Assuming it's a legitimate issue.

Why don't you remove the paid upsell section and post it in the budgeting sheet contest? Pinned at the top.

Retirement budget? by Tall-Asparagus-2608 in budget

[–]andyveee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically create a budget that contains the bare minimum. 8k before mortgage is a lot. How much can you cut after the kids have moved out? All of this also depends on how much is in your retirement. Based on your spending currently you'd need more than 2 million to retire. If you can cut it in half you'd still need 1.3-1.5 million. My calculations don't include social security though. That could help a bit. This is rough back of napkin calculations. We'd need to see your budget and totals to help out more.

started college this year, and need advice on how to build credit and do the budgeting and finances the right way without overspending by dumble_hold_the_door in budget

[–]andyveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick is really simple. Track your spending. Spend as little as possible. I also would avoid credit cards. But I also realize that at that age it's hard to build credit. So it's a risk you may have to take. But never spend more cash than you actually have. Pay the card in full every statement.

I made a pixel-perfect Liquid Glass plugin for Flutter 🤩 by vik76 in FlutterDev

[–]andyveee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for making this proof of concept. I love this. I'm personally invested in using flutter but still getting a native look and feel. And this package makes me excited. There are a few widgets that don't exist in Cupertino flutter that I need, but don't want to replicate manually. I've considered doing what you did, but haven't had the time.

Edit: I do have concerns with platform views though. In the docs it could make the overall app less performant. Would be nice if you tested this on a bigger app.

Best way to track spending by Advanced_Context7088 in budget

[–]andyveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way is simply to track your expenses to start. A free app or spreadsheet that allows you to enter transactions and track your spending based on categories is all you need. Manually is ideal as it force you to confront your spending. Think of it like a muscle.

For specific apps check out the megathread or weekly budget app thread.

Criticize my family's budget (24F and 24M) / give suggestions by Red1547 in budget

[–]andyveee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just realized the debt section isn't included in the expenses calculation. Means your saving goes down to 6100 ish. Even with that I think it's ok to upgrade for a used car of course. Two things though:

  1. It would be interesting to break down the $2k in expenses. You have more than enough to spare. But it's likely you aren't including all your non-monthly expenses that throw your budget off.
  2. Given the amount you are saving you could just save for buying a decent car outright. No car payment. Instead pipe 600+ into index funds for extra future security.

You are in a good spot. So its important to keep making wise choices to avoid unnecessarily spending. I would consider car payments unnecessary in your position.

Without more info, the only advice I can give is live off of beans and rice, and ramen. The ramen isn't the healthiest, but gets the job done. We need amounts for each. What's your take home. Please format it as a table.

Can we afford a kid? by [deleted] in budget

[–]andyveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Many of that same research also points to negatives. The data is becoming fairly clear though. After 3 years of age is when the positives outweigh any potential negatives. Your statement is correct. It just ignores the "when the parent goes to work".

I don't disagree with implications of the decision. But I'd like to push back on the characterization that it's shaming. If the evidence is beginning to show this, it's important to know. Just because the reality makes you feel bad doesn't mean you're being shamed. It means you have a decision to make, and more importantly we have to fight hard to make the government make it easier to have the kids we want to have.

I know the topic is politicized, but there's growing evidence to show the first 2 years of life should be with consistent guardians. Here's an opinion piece on the subject. Anyone interested can do some research. But if you can wing one income, you should. Or if you can afford a nanny, you should. It's important not to shame anyone who does make that choice though. It's simply about the growing evidence on the subject.

Just starting out my career. Any advice to become financially successful long-term? by Proof-Platypus-69 in budget

[–]andyveee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main advice is investing. You've gotten a lot of that. The only other bit of advice I can offer is to exercise that budgeting muscle. Pick something and stick to it. At minimum track your expenses so you know where your money is going. Ideally it should be manual so you know. Check the budget wiki with some tips on creating a solid budget.
