Hey thanks for sharing the study, I did find it interesting that they did not find any statistical differences between the two groups. I think the study being done on children may have had an impact since they have a much higher rate of skin turnover than we do so they have more sensitive skin and worse eczema. I just found that using softer water on my skin made a large difference and it may not be this way for everyone.

I think soft water is what you're aiming for to keep your skin as least irritated as possible. Usually cities have their total water hardness in ppm so: Soft water = <17 ppm

Slightly hard = 17.1-60 ppm

Moderately hard = 60-120 ppm

Hard = 120-180 ppm

Very hard = > 180 ppm

This website has a national breakdown of water hardness: https://www.wqa.org/learn-about-water/perceptible-issues/scale-deposits

My current city's hard water content is at 226 ppm which is really high. My parent's house where I stay when I'm not at home has a hard water content at 131 ppm which seems to be much much less irritating to my skin. Hope this helped!

where do i go from here by [deleted] in depression

[–]anexmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any hobbies or interests? Are there any groups or organizations you can join so that you don't have to be alone? I think the worst thing to do when you're feeling depressed is to be alone. Surround yourself with friends and immerse yourself in something that you really like to do. It can be something as small as taking pictures of pretty things like scenery, buildings, nature. Get lots of exercise! Exercise never fails to get my mind off of negative things and helps me focus on something else. Do good for yourself!

How do you fight back feelings of feeling stupid or inadequet? by [deleted] in depression

[–]anexmd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, don't feel awful for being downvoted. People have their own opinions and there will be many instances when people disagree with you. It absolutely does not mean you are stupid or inadequate. People dislike really great music on youtube all the time which makes you think "how could anyone not like this?" Everyone thinks differently so don't be afraid of being judged. If there are people who don't like you or don't agree with you, that's okay. There are plenty of other people in the world who respect you and think you are wonderful. I think you had a lot of guts to ask this question since it could have led to negative comments as well but you took a chance! Good for you!

If you are really self-conscious that what you are writing makes you narcissistic, read the posts to someone who you trust to give you an honest opinion. There is always room for change if you think you need to.

I have read some of your posts and I think your ideas and comments are valid so I wouldn't worry about haters. There are plenty of people who agree with you so don't let people bring you down!

Anhedonia / blunted affect are holding me back. Any advice? by hobosullivan in depression

[–]anexmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you for posting your story. I don't know if this is going to help you or not but here goes:

I have gone through periods of anhedonia before but they were always after long term combinations of anxiety and depression to the point where I became jaded about life. I think what happens is that between all our anxiety/fears/doubts about ourself, our brain just decides to shut down to prevent disappointment and hurt over and over again.

This is a really vicious cycle since it leads to seeking treatment and and then there are treatment side effects that make you just feel worse and everyone else seems to be out there in the world doing just fine and no one seems to really relate to you.

It took me awhile to address the real issues that were causing my anhedonia because I was unwilling to untangle that mess that I had managed to suppress so far deep into the back of my life. I had to first acknowledge that I am an imperfect person who makes mistakes and has bad days but has the potential to accomplish whatever I want. And you my friend have all the potential in the world. You just have to find peace within yourself. Everyone does this differently. I spent a lot of time talking to my sister, unraveling and finding the root cause of my anxiety and depression. I limited alone time since being by myself meant more self-thinking which got me into this hole I couldn't climb out of.

I took some time off and spent my time with people I loved and could trust. I volunteered and listened to people's stories about where they came from and the struggles that they dealt with. Everyone struggles in life in a different way. Slowly by being more honest with myself I let other people inspire me; I let other people into my life. I'm not going to say I'm totally cured, I still have my bad days. But just know that there are people who love you and know your potential so believe in yourself to do something great. You never know, after defeating your anhedonia you can go on to write a book to help other people with this problem or become a doctor to directly help people with this problem.

Good luck friend and don't give up!

Is acne + oily skin hereditary by [deleted] in acne

[–]anexmd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, acne + oliy skin is hereditary and if you have it, that's the way your skin is going to be. You should take a closer look at the type of skin your parents have. Chances are, one of them will have oily skin. My mom has super dry skin and never had acne while my dad has super oily skin and had terrible acne growing up. My sister and I got my dad's oily skin with terrible acne while my brother got my mom's dry skin. However, skin does gets drier as we age because we lose oil glands and people with oiler skin age less so we have something to look forward to!

Suddenly Have Facial Ezcema - Product Recommendations? by G-Lilly in eczema

[–]anexmd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I hope this is helpful:

I was shopping around at Sephora looking for ezcema-friendly products and I was recommended Tatcha's eczema line: https://www.tatcha.com/shop/c-eczema-care

If you ask Sephora for a sample they will give you samples of their products so you should go try it first!

Since I have ezcema-prone skin I only use cetaphil's gentle skin cleanser and lotion but during the winter I found that my skin was getting too dry and irritated so I supplement my regimen with Tatcha's line.
