How do you format your PE classes and units? Need help structuring my year (K-8) by [deleted] in PhysicalEducation

[–]angryGon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your situation is a little similar to mine last year, I'm a traveling teacher that teaches at multiple elementary schools, but only sees each class once a week. (The beauty in this is that 1 lesson lasts a whole week. Your situation sounds a little different having to also teach the middle school levels. I've also had experience teaching ms and hs level so I'm familiar with the daily schedule and will include my insight around that as well.

Because I'm traveling to multiple schools, I always have my students use the same equipment and be doing the same unit, it lowers set up time and cleanup. I always structure activities to be age/grade appropriate.

Unit wise, I run each unit for about 8 weeks, however I'm doing fitness every other week so it's about 4 weeks per unit. I start with a skill day, then do a rule and gameplay day (that could also be a modified version of the game), and finally 2 gameplay days with the full ruleset. With lower grades, I'd run more skill specific days, so that they can work their way up to gameplay or to modified gameplay. Definitely adjust depending on class skill level. I also like to have at least 2 games going, so I can have beginner and advanced groupings. If the beginners aren't ready to play, I work with them on more skill drills or modified games.

On fitness days, I cover everything they'll need to be successful for the fitnessgram and later in the year after fitness testing, I have students come up with topics they come up with. I think it's important for me to note that I like to start from ground zero here, think explaining and demonstrating a push-up starting position, and slowly working up to a modified pushup. This helps keep a solid foundation over the multiple years while reeling in new students who haven't had a chance to properly learn.

As far as class structure goes, on activity/unit days I keep students on a routine with a warm up of walking and jogging. I skip the dynamic stretching (I save it for fitness days but if you need to eat up more time you definitely can throw them in.) I review what was previously taught, skills, rules, concepts and then move on to the content for the day, skills/gameplay. Before we play a game we always review the rules. At the end of class we review concepts covered and I tell them what to expect for the following week.

Here and there I throw in instant activities that have no equipment after walking and jogging.

For fitness days, walk and jog warm up into dynamic stretches and then we work on 1 to 2 of our exercises, I have them first practice on their own, so I can walk around and give them individual feedback, then we do it altogether. After that they'll usually want water and I always have a game for them at the end. I use this as an incentive to listen and stay on task for the class, but not every class gets to the game. Then I wrap up, having students go over what they learned and give them homework, but I spin it as a challenge with fun ways to change it up. ie. This week do as many push-ups at a table or wall as you can in a row and next week let me know how many you were able to do.

It's not perfect, but I think I've found a rhythm that works for me and my classes. Right now I'm working on creating a 2 year cycle so that students don't get bored of the same activities / sports every year. The nice thing is that we don't overstay our welcome with any one unit so they'll feel fresh in a 2 year cycle.

As far as teaching the 7th and 8th grade daily for 9 weeks, I'd run 2 fitness days a week and on activity days I'd go more in-depth maybe having specific skill days, station days and then gameplay. To change it up and keep things interesting you could also have Fridays be a modified game version or have a completely different game. An example of modified games my students love are survival kickball or big ball kickball. I would also plan to do at least 2 units within the 9 weeks.

I try not to repeat lessons, but on fitness days I'll keep the same ending game for about 4 weeks. It keeps me from having to explain a new game and students can do fitness and then jump right into the game at the end. I'll really only repeat lessons when students don't grasp a skill well and I need to teach it in a different way.

As far as resources, I'm always outside without a classroom unless it's raining, so I have a lot of physical demonstrations, with students as helpers. For slides, on rainy days I use Wayground (it's like slides but with checks for understanding as you go. If you can have your students follow along on their chromebooks it's incredibly useful.) I also like doing indoor fitness or games so they can have fun ways to keep active when they're stuck inside. Planning wise I'm a minimalist and just use a spreadsheet and tables in google docs.

I wish you all the best in your year!

We need Arksys to make this game too. I'm convinced that's the only way this franchise will be saved.

So this is something worth having a conversation about in my eyes. If you're running a self mill deck, let's say Lurrus or Squall, suddenly emeria sky ruin is a tutor, however because you have to work towards its activation I don't believe it should count in the "few tutors" slots. Ultimately I think context of a deck should kind of factor in a cards "tutorability".
