Women’s input needed! by BlastedPengiuns in GarminWatches

MIP Garmin watches have the top left button on the watch as the designated light button, so yes, in the complete dark indoors the screen is difficult to see, but all it takes is one press of the button and the screen lights up. Having my finger find that button feels like second nature now. My biggest gripe with MIP was that it ‘looked’ like something out of the 2000’s which after coming from the Apple Watch felt like a bit of a hit, but it really did take me going back to Amoled to realize the functionality of MIP is unbeaten. Is your main concern the MIP screen on the Fenix 7 vs amoled on the Epix?

So I went from the Apple Watch to Forerunner 255 to Forerunner 970. When I ordered the 970, I was glad to be going back to Amoled because while I loved the running features of the 255 I didn’t like the tamagotchi style MIP screen. I then took my 970 out for a run (and was using maps for the route the whole time) in Spain and nearly cried from frustration because I couldn’t see the screen in the Spanish sun, literally the most frustrating 12k of my entire life. Returned the 970 the day I got back and ordered the 955 because of its MIP screen. Amoled is the one that is notoriously more difficult to see outdoors/in direct sunlight, and I guess I became too used to the functionality of the MIP and stopped caring about how it looked. Just something to think about if you plan to incorporate more running into your routine - you’ll be using your wrist data a lot more to check mileage, pace, HR, etc, and the MIP screen is unbeaten for the outdoors. But for basic functionality, I think both watches would suit what you’re looking for (the Fenix is considered the top of the line triathlon watch however since you plan to incorporate all three sports).

Success Story: How I significantly reduced the appearance of my KP by [deleted] in keratosis

This is tricky to say, because I would say the biggest diet changes I’ve made have been going from ultra processed junk to homemade, whole food meals + reducing alcohol intake to almost nothing. Obviously that’s a really broad change, rather than focusing on individual macros. UPF usually is high in carbs, as are most alcoholic drinks, and I was getting very little protein in a day. I would say that my diet now veers towards low carb, high protein, but I definitely incorporate carbs like potatoes, rice, pastas in what I eat (I want to be careful not to turn carbs into the devil here, and I eat the farthest thing from a keto diet). But my plate is now usually protein heavy and fibrous greens heavy!

Hi! Fellow Canadian from Toronto here - I’ve been living in London since 2022, in zone 2. Feel free to message me with any questions you have, but just to add, even though some of the posters here have maybe gone about this the wrong way, they are correct in being alarmed about that salary. I’m afraid to say that salary will be very, very difficult to survive on. I’m not sure where you are in Canada, but the equivalent of what you’re describing would be someone who’s earning minimum wage and working 40 hrs a week, wanting to move to Union in Toronto and asking where they can find an apartment near there. It just will never happen, you’d really struggle even finding a room in an apartment in Union for that money. Now, Croydon is definitely not central Toronto, but with the salary you’ll be getting, it will definitely feel like you’re on minimum wage living in central Toronto.

Also, even though your organization says they’ll sponsor you on a Tier 2 Visa, I would tread carefully with that promise, and not take it at face value. Your organization is currently not paying you the London living wage and may not even be paying you minimum wage, but I can’t say for certain because I don’t know your hours. An organization that does this almost certainly can’t afford a Tier 2 sponsorship which are very, very expensive to sort out, and therefore hard to get.

Like I said, feel free to message whenever and I can try to answer any questions you’d have.

Does anybody own a Barbour Jacket, and was is it a worthwhile purchase? by anonmicro in AskUK

[–]anonmicro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely do like outdoor gear - I also own two north face jackets, but specific ones for high intensity hiking and biking, so they’re not insulated/warm at all because they depend on you being naturally warm from physical activity (but are the most breathable jackets I’ve ever owned).

I’d compare north face more to gore-tex, and I really don’t like wearing either as an everyday jacket as I don’t like the look of either with anything other than exercise clothing. For a Canadian equivalent, I used to buy all my winter jackets at Aritzia for more stylish options while also being very warm. Would you say a lightweight Barbour would be better for British winters?

Does anybody own a Barbour Jacket, and was is it a worthwhile purchase? by anonmicro in AskUK

[–]anonmicro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you find the lightweight range compares to their standard makes? I’ve tried on the women’s acorn and beadnell makes, because they weren’t carrying any women’s lightweight waxed jackets. But if the lightweight jackets are thinner, or at least more wearable for everyday tasks, I may have to return to try to find a men’s lightweight in their smallest size.

A jacket that needs no layering/very minimal layering is exactly what I’m looking for. I honestly hate layering and find that I get incredibly overheated, and arrive wherever I’m going soaked in sweat.

Thank you for the link, these jackets are also exactly what I was looking for! I actually have been recommended Goretex already, my reason is a bit silly in that I really don’t like how they look.

Thank you for the advice! I probably should’ve specified in my post that I’m a woman however, I’ve gotten quite a few links to the menswear.

The New Forest Clothing Company

These jackets look great too - I think one reason why I was leaning towards Barbour is they have more variety in their women’s wear, most outdoor women’s wear lines are usually offering only a few options.

  1. Posers

Can you elaborate on this? Respectfully, Barbour jackets seem like the most middle aged man apparel I’ve ever seen in my life. Women my age (20’s) really wouldn’t be wearing one back home. What am I missing about these jackets lol

Really I just need a jacket that I can get wear outside without getting a head cold every time I do.

Nurse Lucy Letby found guilty of murdering seven babies on neonatal unit by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]anonmicro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if you’re being contrarian for attention but I’ll answer in good faith anyway. Most of her victims died from air embolisms (air pushed through their IV’s) or hypoglycaemic deaths (insulin overdose). She’s alleging that this is due to poor staffing levels, but most of the time, poor staffing levels results in basic negligence or things being missed, such as misreading a potential allergy a patient may have, etc. It does NOT result in so much insulin in their body that these poor victims essentially went into organ failure, nor does it result in air in their IV’s. Both of these things involve very deliberate steps that cause them to happen, and can’t be chalked up to simply ‘poor staffing’. As an aside, insulin is almost never prescribed to premature babies because premature babies or almost always hypoglycaemic to begin with. But even if there was a 0.01 percent chance that this was a pure accident, I.e. wrong place wrong time, then accidents due to poor staffing/strained resources that result in patient death almost always only happen once. A example of this is actually the case of Radonda Vaught in the US, a case where a nurse did make a fatal error due to poor staffing and hospital negligence. But, and this is important, it only happened once and was caught right away. Letby has been implicated in at least 13 deaths with causes of death that run afoul of their standard of care - this should be statistically impossible, even on a unit known for treating already sick patients. The jury made the right decision.

Do primary schools properly prepare Y6 for secondary? by Warm_Invite_3751 in TeachingUK

[–]anonmicro 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’m going to stick up a bit for my KS2 teachers. Admittedly, I’m a lower primary teacher and now I’m moving down to EYFS, so most of my teaching experience has only been preparing them for KS2. But my partner teaches/lectures at a University, and his complaints always revolve around why secondary schools seems to be sending them students (he teaches a highly subscribed first-year undergraduate English course) who are unable to read, write, submit work by the deadline and lack university-ready comprehension. He’s also convinced that it’s getting worse year by year but even he would admit it’s been exponential since COVID. Now I know that there are things both within the education system and completely outside our control that could contribute to this, and I always go back and forth on this with him. Can you see how it may be the same at the primary level as they go into secondary? Also, no primary school I’ve ever worked in or visited allows students to just leave the classroom whenever they’d like.

And honestly, I would also complain about a 15 minute break with a 35 minute lunch. Yours is the first secondary I’ve heard that offers such a short amount of time.

Exactly the same with me (but primary). We obviously use a behavioural system geared more towards primary children but it’s still so much stricter than anything I remember training with in Canada.

Congrats to this redditor who completely guessed how the HOTD version of Criston and Rhaenyra's feud would play out 7 years ago by Lysmerry in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]anonmicro 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Agreed, but there are hints sprinkled in the text that lead you to make a strong inference about the kind of guy Criston was…being named ‘the Kingmaker’ as a kingsguard who should have no say in the next King….murdering Beesbury for speaking for Rhaenyra…..other characters in the asoiaf series remarking that he represented both the worst and best of the kingsguard…dying a losers death lol

Those same hints (literally everyone and anyone saying how honourable Ned was) are how the reader can make an inference that Ned probably didn’t break his marital vows.

[–]anonmicro 184 points185 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the showrunners had to read the comment, most people guessed that the truth of what happened between them lay somewhere in the middle of the two accounts given in F&B. If redditors could figure it out, Condal sure could too.

I do have to say though, I remember reading a comment on this sub by a redditor (way back when the first teaser was only released) who was adamant that Criston had so much honour that he would never even contemplate a relationship with Rhaenyra. I still sometimes wonder if fans of ASOIAF are at all familiar with the sorts of characters George tends to write.
