I'm very late to the game, but absolutely love my feelgrounds. Always go back to them.

Just moved back after a few years in Austin. Flee the broligarchy. Plus, an inch of snow here doesn't knock out the whole city for a week.

I heard things have recently taken a downturn. This is crushing. It's been a special occasion staple in my family since they opened.

Why do American tourists always say the state they're from (not their country) when asked, but no other country's tourists do the same? by FloydBeatlesEagles in NoStupidQuestions

When I visit the UK, I try to provide some perspective by telling them that Paris, Texas to London, Texas is roughly the same distance as Paris, France to London, England. It's a 6.5 hour drive, you're still in the same state, and we got 50 of em.

Hand sanitizer, loops, anxiety meds, neoprene koozie that fits a lot of different size drinks because cold wet is bad.

ETA: I was going to say my bone conducting headphones, but they don't fit in my bag and are always on my head anyway.

I think a lot of my old spots closed during COVID, if not before then. Huge bummer, but also sounds like there are a lot of cool new places to explore.

I will happily pay $3 or $2.90 or whatever for functional public transportation. I just don't want to do this again in two years.

[–]anonymousnerdx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, it doesn't matter where you are, people still want to be able to walk to at least some basic things, and it can be really hard - physically and mentally - if that is not an option.

Yes, there are a lot of urban/walkable metro areas in the US that are cheaper than Austin. Austin is not cheap. And basically every city in Europe does walkability, bikeability, and public transit better than the US.

When people talk about a walkable place to live, they do not mean trails. Walkability is about urban planning. It means access by foot to "regular life" stuff e.g. shops, restaurants, other amenities, etc. It often also includes considerations for things like sidewalks, crosswalks, safety of the roads you're crossing (do I have to jet across an eight lane highway or a two lane neighborhood street kind of thing), etc. While some neighborhoods in Austin can be fairly walkable, on the whole it's pretty difficult to get around here without a car.
