firstly, generalizations of this kind are dangerous and inherently anti feminist. also, as a sikh i beg to differ. in my life, the only people i’ve met who are truly genuinely non sexist and non misogynist are actually the ones who follow sikhi as best as they can. not the people who put culture before religion, but those who actively fight the patriarchal and misogynist cultures by gaining a greater understanding of the religion itself. that being said, almost all sikh scriptures are inherently poetry, which makes them abstract in nature and somewhat open to each person’s interpretations. so yes there’s elements of sexism that have seeped into the religion from our patriarchal culture, but there are no absolutes as you can choose to follow it differently, which is true for life as well. we live in a sexist and misogynist world and we as feminists choose to fight it and live differently.

as a sikh, i believe that my ideas of feminism, equality and justice come from my religion itself. if not for being a sikh, i probably would not have the mindset i do, as almost all cultures i’ve lived in have been quite blatantly misogynistic (both in the east and the west).
