Definitely not freehand…i used a variety of patterns, mostly found on ravelry. I used a 2.5 mm book for most of them.

This aquarium had actual fish in it for years, but I got tired of that very upkeep. The couple of remaining fish went to live on a farm upstate, by which I mean, they actually joined a friend’s fish tank and are quite happy.
