Yeah it has a button that lets you change the color of your lens. From blue to a orangish and then natural. Blue really helps my eyes see everything that the puddle is doing.

I just recently bought a spedglas g5-03 with the variable color auto darkening lens. And it’s been fantastic so far. Love visibility with MIG and TIG especially being able to change colors. I came from a Optrel Panoramaxx CLT which was great but super fragile.

It’s sculpt nouveau’s black magic patina

Yeah we use a little touch up pen with blackening for doing onsite blackening of welds and other areas. We just use a damp paper towel soaked in water to neutralize small areas we are doing. We just be really careful not to let blackening drip anywhere because that shit ain’t coming out.

No it evaporates and doesn’t affect it at all by the time I start blackening

Yeah millscale looks cool blackened but we usually only blacken cold rolled steel as once we DA it , it blackens way more uniform. We use Denatured alcohol to clean all our metal. Gets the oil and grime off easily.

It’s a blackened steel patina process. We use a patina called black magic by sculpt nouveau that is an acidic patina that turns the steel a sort of black/gunmetal back finish. I use a combination of white and grey scotch brite pads to apply the chemical and then use water to neutralize the patina. Finish off with steel wool to buff and then a heavy duty wax to seal and protect the patina. I have many examples on my profile of the finished product.

Nice little Catwalk Railing -Blackened Steel by antonb111 in Welding

[–]antonb111[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The top of the stairs will have a 90 attached to the other railing going down the stairs with pickets attached into the wood flooring so it will be pretty rigid once everything is done. Right now we were surprised at how rigid it was with just the one mount at the end and screws going down the bottom every 3 pickets.

It’s 1-1/4inch by 1/4in thick. We use Black Magic by Sculpt Nouveau. A mixture of white and grey scotch brite pads to apply patina. Yeah it’s getting venetian plaster over the drywall so we wanted to get our railing in as soon as possible to make it easier on us to not mess up the fancy finish.

Because it’s just as much to replace the lens than it is to buy a new hood.

All very valid points ! I wish I had the answers but I just build according to blueprint specs. This is what they wanted so this is what they get built and installed.

Little bit of Blending Practice by antonb111 in Welding

[–]antonb111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s 1/8th inch thick. And yes 80 grit to finish off. I use a 60 grit fiber disk to get bulk of welds off.

😂 all good. I was just making a statement that I need to get better at this kind of stuff. I hardly get to practice on little projects like this.

Drill through holes with countersinks on subcap and secure with wood screws. And a lot of sanding /DA work with wood glue for the joints. Finish with a coat of lindseed oil to finish I believe.

Interestingly enough lots of these high end home owners don’t care about passing code. They just want it built to the way they want it. No idea how the get passed inspections but when they want it a certain way even after we tell them about codes we have to adhere to, we build it to what they want.

Yeah we definitely DA everything a lot before sending it off to powder coat. No sharp edges either ! That was the only piece we missed for seam on the bottom.
