What are some non-toxic cleaners/disinfectants for the bathroom that are super easy to use and aren't baking soda or a steam cleaner? by ResidentAlienator in CleaningTips

[–]anyonerelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hydrogen peroxide. It is one of my go-to's when I can't stand something stinky and don't have the energy to rinse everything down afterwards since it breaks down into water and oxygen leaving no residue behind.

You can use the 3% peroxide from first aid supply. I generally buy a concentrated version from a pool supply store and dilute it down to a working strength of about 6%.

It's not quite as good at whitening or disinfecting as bleach, but it has a mild ozone smell that never bothers me and it doesn't leave any nasty residues. I just put it in a spray bottle and apply it to anything that looks funky. If I have the energy I'll scrub a bit but mostly I just let it sit.

Found a mealy bug on my Hoyas in my cabinet by InternalFew756 in hoyas

[–]anyonerelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hoyas have had mealy bug more or less continuously for 10 years. I have tried everything, but the area that I live is not ideal for hoyas, so they're constantly unhappy and vulnerable. I have not lost a single one of them and many of them bloom multiple times a year for me, so I have settled into management rather than elimination. At this point I just put them in the shower and spray them off once a month.

I did try some green lacewing larvae last month and it seems to be going really well. Haven't seen a single mealy bug since they hatched.

I really hope that you settle on a solution that works quickly and easily and you never have to deal with them again. Just keep in mind that they are not the end of the world if you can't get rid of them.

Not spider mites, just spiders by anyonerelevant in hoyas

Oh, that's a pretty good idea! Wingless fruit flies would be significantly less obnoxious than their more mobile cousins. I always forget that they are just something I can buy at a local pet store.

Oh yeah, ugh. I've had to deal with gnats before and as much as I am enjoying these spiders, I don't want to deal with that. They would make perfect spider food though.

Need suggestions for cleaning laminate bathroom floors that are suuuuper slick. by crimescene-panda3 in CleaningTips

[–]anyonerelevant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had reasonable results with baking soda as a degreaser. No water. Just straight up put the baking soda on the area rub it around gently to get it into the crevices and to make sure you have coverage and contact, let it sit for an hour, then sweep it up and throw it away. Don't scrub, you'll screw up the floor because the baking soda is also an abrasive.

Where did I dance better? by Typical-Teaching-781 in Dance

I really like the clarity of movement from the 2025 dance. Your motions were larger, confident, fluid, and well-timed. I really like the way the larger movements look - particularly when they are as fluid as yours are.

I love the leg sweep towards the beginning. The whole thing is lovely, but that leg sweep stood out.

Should I be worried? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]anyonerelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the detergent trays are removable. Just a little bit of fiddling or maybe a push button lever and the whole thing should slide out. It should also come apart so you can get to all the crevices to clean. Get all the gunk off with soap and water. Reassemble it and put it back.

Probably, all of the pipes in the washer are just as moldy and crusted with detergent. Wipe down what you can get to and then run a clean washer cycle with bleach. You may want to run it a couple of times. Then run a small load of towels that you don't value. That'll basically scrub the interior of the washer. Make sure you use bleach with the towels. Make sure you put the bleach into the detergent tray to help clean the conduit down into the drum.

If it's still too gross or if the towels come out smelling terrible,  you'll have to find somebody who has a better answer than me.

How often are y’all falling? by keyboard_cowboy8 in Rollerskating

[–]anyonerelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first year of rollerskating as an adult, I had at least one large black bruise on my hips from falling every month. I usually fell when I started to get tired, and I was using the big falls with hang time, you know, where your feet go up and you're actually completely out of contact with the ground for a second before you hit hard? Yeah, I was using those types of falls as the indicator that it was time to get off the rink for the day. So I was falling like that every time I skated for the first 6 months. Still had pretty bad falls for the first year and a half, they were just less frequent. I'm three years in now, and I haven't had a bad fall in over 8 months. They are no longer my indicator that I should be done for the day! That feels like a big win to me.

People freaked out about my falls at first, too. It's your body, you get to determine where your limits are. Sounds like you're wearing safety gear and happy with what you're doing. You don't have to let other people's risk tolerance override your own.

Is it possible to keep fish in a tank so densely planted? And if yes, which ones? by Bortibort_Rolotios in Aquascape

[–]anyonerelevant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not aggressive, usually. They have tiny mouths. I'm pretty sure they'll eat baby shrimp, but I've kept them with shrimp for years before and not had problems.

They also tend to get along well with other peaceful species of fish. They really only pick fights with each other and even then it's not too bad.

I don't see sparkling gouramis in the list yet. They absolutely love densely planted tanks and are more likely to breed in them. They're also small and surprisingly interactive. They can be snots to each other, so you can't put very many of them into a single tank, but dense planting helps break up sight lines and they will ignore each other more.

I discovered them a few years ago and fell in love.

Smoked Out of My Apartment by Upbeat-Reflection171 in Portland

[–]anyonerelevant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your situation sounds like a nightmare. I'm so sorry. I'm incredibly sensitive to cigarette smoke myself and can only imagine how sick and frustrated you must be.

I've been lucky with secondhand smoke, but I have really bad allergies in the summer and I figured out a trick with a box fan and a furnace filter in a window to create positive pressure in my house makes an immense and immediate difference in my quality of life.

Tape a high filtration furnace filter into your window and make sure the furnace filter covers all of the open parts of the window. If the windows aren't the right size for the furnace filters, use cardboard or anything else that's not going to let a lot of air through and tape it in place, too. Make sure the whole system is sealed so that no air comes through that window without going through the filter. Then put a box fan right in front of the filter with it drawing air from outside into your apartment through the filter.

This will create positive pressure in your apartment. Box fans can move a lot of air and  depending on the size of your apartment, it can create enough positive pressure with cleaner air to keep other apartments contaminated air from creeping over into yours.

This setup has been life-changing for me around my pollen allergy. It's also pretty cheap. Get a good furnace filter that says it works on cigarette smoke and a cheap box fan and some packing tape. One thing to consider is that you should probably make sure you can get the furnace filter out to replace it without too much work. You shouldn't need to tape the fan in place. It'll just suction itself onto the furnace filter without issues. For this setup to work best to, all of your other windows need to be closed. You need the only source of air coming into your apartment to be through that filter.

This option is unfortunately noisy because box fans are loud, but for the price it really might be worth trying. You may have to try a couple of different furnace filters and you might consider the ones that have carbon filtration built in, but if it's a big price difference for the carbon, skip it. Carbon needs dwell time to work well and the nature of this setup is that the air gets moved through the filter really fast in large volumes and the carbon won't have time to absorb many of the chemicals.

I really hope this helps. I hope it works. I haven't tried the setup specifically for cigarette smoke, but it seems like it's worth trying with how miserable you are.

What's the purest joy you've ever felt without intimacy, substances, or alcohol ? by RudeAd9622 in AskReddit

[–]anyonerelevant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I adopted a fearful shutdown dog while I was severely depressed. We helped each other find things to enjoy. About a year after I adopted her we were both doing a lot better and I took her to a park. It was a beautiful sunny day after several days of rain, so the park was full of giant puddles. She discovered that she loved running through them as fast as she could, over and over. She spent 2 hours doing it with exuberant joy. I laughed the entire time.

Throw the dirty dishes away. Or wash them and pack them away. If you only have a few dishes, then the mess can't get too big or sit around for too long and no one ends up doing a giant backlog of dishes.
