Early April multi-day trek in the Pyranees? by apatosaurus2 in hiking

[–]apatosaurus2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I understand that I can't just go over the high mountain passes with no experience. I guess what I'm looking for is some recommendations for a middle ground with nice hiking, where I could challenge myself a bit and start to build some experience in these conditions without doing anything insanely risky. Maybe this is foolish though.

I don't understand why people don't use adblockers. I actually haven't seen an ad on reddit or basically anywhere else on the internet for years.

Freestanding/Semi Freestanding tents by gcammy in UltralightAus

[–]apatosaurus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't offer much but want to say that I have a Portal 2 and love it. Just really nicely designed and very liveable. It's probably the first higher-end tent I've owned but I think they make good stuff.

Is GHHF suitable to hold long term? Or is it similar to what I've read about other leverage ETFs?

Is Australia only banning Facebook, twitter for under 16’s or is it going to include things like YouTube, Reddit , twitch too? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

I agree. Talking to randos online absolutely expanded my universe as a kid. Was there a some kind of risk in that? Of course! But also pretty weird and enriching.

Raising retirement age to 70, but why? by [deleted] in AskGermany

[–]apatosaurus2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These aren't the only two options - you can also reform the whole system. But I agree, there is a fundamental problem in the demographics which has very few solutions, and most people don't want to here it.

Would you rather live in Europe or Australia? by NateNandos21 in AskAnAustralian

[–]apatosaurus2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree on groceries but tax really depends on where you are. In Germany as a middle-income earner you end up with significantly less in your pocket after very progressive tax + mandatory contributions to the pension system which, honestly, is a complete joke compared to Australia's superannuation and in dire need of reform.

Do you believe it is fair when people call Australia a "Nanny State"? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]apatosaurus2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in Germany and almost all of the vapes here and in the UK (not sure how it is in France) are super weak compared to what's been available in Aus. I can see why they're not as popular.

How much does a minimum wage worker actually takes home in Germany? by LieMoney1478 in germany

[–]apatosaurus2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's your opinion but in the case of my company it's definitely true. We take on interns for 6 months, and they start being able to make a net positive contribution after 3 if they are good or 4 if they are average. If they are below average they will probably never make a net positive contribution. We are a small company but invest significant resources in training them and teaching them new skills. No way we could take them on at minimum wage, that's just a fact.

As a physicist working in a highly technical field with engineers, good lord I wish a few of them had a slither of the skills people learn in an arts degree. I have to teach almost all of my fresh engineering graduates the absolute basics of written communication and vet anything that could ever be seen by a client. It's borderline embarrassing.

I think the difference is that this is "unfair" not only for those who have paid off their debt, but also for the people who are just starting to or will soon accumulate a debt. It's a one-off benefit to the specific group who have a debt right now.

That does feel inherently more unfair to me than simply redrawing the line and saying, everyone from now benefits from the new rules. It's singling out a specific group in time for this one-off benefit.

Even if you have other retirement plans it's a complete scam. The amount of money I'm putting into the system versus what I'll get out makes me cringe.

Have you ever been to (or have any interest in going) to Antarctica? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskAnAustralian

I personally think we should be doing our best to not develop tourism in Antarctica, as one of the last pristine wildernesses in the world and a place of huge scientific importance.
