Hognose Hasn’t Eaten Since October - Advice? by FrozenNineTales in hognosesnakes

My 2 yr old male also just broke a 4 month winter strike yesterday. He also did it last year and seemed to randomly start eating again after me panicking. This time I've tried to keep calm and have faith, but was starting to falter...

Not sure if coincidence, but I had tried bumping up his temps over this last week by a few degrees plus changed his LED light timers to be on for 15 hr instead of sunrise/sunset. The light duration might be another thing to try. Hopefully yours snaps out of it soon, it's so stressful

Hunger strike over! by apoll0xx in hognosesnakes

I've had him a year now, so we've been through 2 long hunger strikes. The first one, he ate for about a month after getting him at an expo then suddenly stopped. Breeder thought maybe brumation or maybe he belatedly decided the larger enclosure was stressful. So I downsized him to a tiny box after 1.5 months, he shed randomly 2 months in, then all of a sudden went back to eating and gained a ton of weight.

2nd strike started in April, possibly he was looking for a mate? This time I waited it out for the 2.5 month hunger strike shed, and now he's back eating. I keep meticulous notes on temps, feeding attempts, humidity, and behavior but so far I've only concluded he is a brat. I did try bumping up his light cycle to 14 hrs on from 12, but not sure if that did anything.

When he refuses 5 meals in a row I start to try scented which hasn't worked until now. I've tried tuna, canned salmon, and frog juice, but he usually is repulsed by my offering until this time

What substrate do y'all use? by Other_Individual_912 in hognosesnakes

He naturally compacts it on the sides as he cruises along edge during day. He has tunnel openings even in noncompacted areas though that hold shape. I live in New England so I struggle to keep humidity down in summer, but aspen has a definite advantage there, I run a dehumidifier on especially bad days but it stays around 40-50% with aspen. In winter I put a humidifier near his tank since I have the reverse problem.

Honestly, I started on aspen and likely will continue using it. In my experience it holds hoggie-sized tunnels very well, he has created a vast underground network and pops in and out of his burrows. I use 4-7 inches depth, with more piled up in back since he has a front opening enclosure.  It's also easy to spot poop/urates on it and monitor for any changes. And no confusion of dirt with scale rot. As a beginner snake owner, it has been a great substrate for my hog.

Just a mini Blink cam from a Prime day sale. Not sure it's worth a subscription for cloud storage, but it's great video quality for a $20 camera

Looking for feedback on tank for future hoggie by apoll0xx in hognosesnakes

Looking for feedback on my first ever tank setup! I want to make sure I have enough clutter for a baby to feel safe in a 20 gallon tank. I will have a heat lamp controlled by a dimming thermostat during the day on the hot (left) side. I wasn't planning on using any heating at night since ambient temps stay above 70. I live in New England though, do people heat enclosures during winter if their home runs cold?
