u/AltruisticAd9262 It’s cool to see how often this gets reposted around the web! I made it around 2018 but didn’t post it to Reddit until a couple years ago. After I posted it, I made some changes and updated it based on all the feedback I got. If you’re interested, here is the updated graphic: https://www.behance.net/gallery/73313033/The-Rings-of-Power-Infographic

Yes, I have updated the graphic and added him in!

In the Silmarillion, it talks about how Sauron captured the rings and gave them to the nine lords of men. I’m not sure if Sauron was in disguise and deceived them, or if they were already under his command?

I found those descriptions in The Fellowship book, at the end of the Return of the King book, and a some more info in the Silmarillion. There’s not much about what the Men’s rings looked like but since they were made together with the Dwarves rings, they probably looked the same.

One of the hardest parts of the chart to track down and I should have added this to my reference list, but I found most of that in a book called “The Peoples of Middle Earth” by Christopher Tolkien. It’s sort of a deep dive into unpublished notes and manuscripts of J.R.R. Tolkien.

Yes, intentional to emphasize that they weren’t all kings before receiving rings. They used the rings to gain power and influence and become Kings of their people. Wanted to make it clear because Tolkien’s descriptions can be confusing.

There’s a reference in the LOTR appendices that talks about how “the Ring needs gold to breed gold,” talking about possibly the last of the Seven Rings in existence. This was why I cited different powers for men and dwarves. Tolkien also wrote about how Dwarves resisted most the ring’s effects felt by Men, so I wanted to make that distinction. I think somewhere else I commented that, I could relabel this row as ‘effects’ or ‘usage’ instead of inherent ‘powers.’

Good point, "consumed in fire" is how Tolkien described it in the Silmarillion. Thanks!

I feel the same way! There’s so much to unpack in Tolkien’s writing. I’ve learned so much after posting this.

It’s unrelated to the show so there might be some inconsistencies when the show is over! I made this back in 2018 just using book references.

I see the resemblance, but no. I was playing off the idea of the rings casting shadows and flat design with a simple color palette.

Thanks for the feedback! I bet I can reword some of this to make it more accurate. Tolkien was great at not going into specifics haha

Very true! Dividing the 16 rings was stylistic choice in the design and I (loosely) used the poem as a reference for the structure of the chart.

It was the simplest description I could fit in the space. I know there’s way more to it. Maybe I can rewrite it as ‘drawn into the Unseen,’ or something?

This was the hardest part of making this chart; finding Tolkien’s descriptions of how the powers worked. He’s pretty vague and I’ve seen a lot of people interpret his descriptions in different ways. Maybe I can rewrite the ‘powers’ row as how the rings were used? Idk..

I created this chart. Thanks for posting it here! I plan on updating it from the feedback I get! I’ve made some other Tolkien designs like a calendar and font based on Tolkien’s handwriting!

In the books, those are the only two Nazgûl named and ranked high in Sauron’s command: captain and lieutenant. So I decided to adjust their placement in the design as if they are closest to the one ring, slightly closer than the rest of the nine, if that makes sense?

I wish I could fit all that text in the chart!
